Decided to paint the hood blackout on my 80. I had done it with my last 80 and really liked the look and actual functionality of the paint. Here's kinda the lowdown on how we did it.

I had some leftover paint from last time, so here's what it is.

We used SEM 39144 Trim Black paint, which is basically the paint used for your trim :D

My bodyshop friend did all the work. I basically sanded and picked things up

Started out by taping the lines on the hood on the vehicle, eying them to get the best look. Once we got the look, we took the hood off. Two bolts per side on the hood for the bracket, and then 1 on the hood strut. Make sure take washer fluid hose off before you take the hood off :D

After you wax on/wax off your arm gets tired. Go grab your youngest child as she's unaware thats its work and she'll enjoy sanding for you :D Be leery of state/local child labor laws when performing this step. :D

After you've sanded a little bit, blow it off and then clean with a rag and light laquer thinner.

Then tape/paper the rest of the hood so it's ready for paint.

Start painting :D I couldn't tell you the mix he used, but he used a spray gun and some reducer, and then a some point during the 3 coats he used he switched it up a little bit.

After painting 3 coats, you are ready to go. Being 90ish degrees out, the paint dries quickly. Start to finish time was 1 hour 20 minutes, and that was taking pics, 3 coats of paint and running to the shop to get something.

here's the final product.

And of course a poser pic.

Thats pretty slick. I was going to go with the 3M vinyl route a few months back but decided against it because of the long term fading.

<todo>Look through Rolodex for friend with paint shop</todo>

Looks awesome.

Mine is the same. We have very good tastes

I'm thinking about doing this to my 4Runner too.

Looks great!

I don't get it, why do that if you don't have lights on the roof? Just 'cause?

It REALLY helps with sun glare. My hood was really shiny and anytime the sun was bright it would reflect pretty bad off the hood. This helps cut that down.

Oh, and of course it looks cool :D:p

I've got a white whale as well.. my paint must not be as glossy as yours was, 'cause I never noticed a problem w/ glare.

Ben,

Just get an all BLACK 80/LX next time like me :hillbilly:

Seriously though, I like that look a LOT  :steer:

More pics

The hood looks great. My bug guard did a number on the front of my hood, so I am thinking 'bout lining the front lip. As good as the 80 looks, you gotta post up some shots of that BAJA Bug. LOVE the veedubs too.

Got a white one too, I had actually been to a vehicle wrap shop to get a quote on doing this in matte black vinyl. The said about 150 to do it, and it is removable. Seriously considering that route.

A few more poser shots :D

The paint was really cheap...I'm thinking$30.00 for the quart. My friend had all the others, so I've done 2 hoods and still have paint left for probably another hood.

If you want pics of the Vdub, I started a thread in chat on it. It's called "Hey mace, a baja bug " or something along those lines.

I really like the black rigs, thats for sure. But they are still all shiny :D you need a dull black strip :grinpimp: to pimp.
