hi everybody
ive been reading this forum quite some time ago but now when i have hilux i became regular reader and found lot of infos about good old 2Ls and 2LT
i will post some photos in future when i will be painting the frame and some other touch ups, first thing i did was front axle seals, serpetine belts and i turned the fuel screw in a little bit, in the future i wll be probably swapping the engine for something more powerful - maybe 1KZ, OM605 or 1,9 tdi with mechanicall rotary pump, im not planning on running turbo on this engine even tho it only has 180 000 kms, i like it so far and it feels even more powerfull than V6 1990 4runner we had before :D
as for now im using the truck as my daily driver and for commuting to university once a week with average mileage being around 8,5-9,5L/100km (25 - 28 MPG), i think it will get even lower in the summer since its winter here and im using 4wd quite often and hauling stuff on the trailer behind, the worst mileage was around 12L/100 if i remeber correctly but that was lot of trailer towing, 4wd 4low and on forest roads so,

On photos it looks pretty mint but after closer look the paint is far from perfect, the bed and canopy colors dont match but i dont mind these kind of thing because if i accidentally scratch it in forest or someting it would hurt so much :D

OM605's are nice engines but getting quite pricey, and with a 1.9tdi youre leaving a lot of room for activities. Im looking in to putting the 2.4 diesel litre from Volvo in, as it would find quite nicely. It is taking ages as its by no means an easy swap but it should be done by years end(hopefully). Another good option is the 2.5 R5 from the audi A6C4, theres plenty of info on that on VAG forums.
 
In Europe the 1KD or 2KD engines should be available. You'd need a wrecked vehicle to take the whole wiring harness to make it easy.

It will be closest to a bolt-in you'll ever find.

The 2KD has piston cracking issues, and they're pretty expensive second hand

That might be why we never really saw them in the NZ/Aus market. I feel like 2wd hilux were available with that engine for about 3 months. Then they all switched to the 1KD.
 
I love the LN105, it was my first car, the car I learned to drive in. I drove it on a 155,000 km continuous trip around Asia and eastern Europe for 4.5 years. Then it became my first restoration project.

I realise the 2L can be excruciatingly slow on autobahns and going up hills, but I ony really felt it lacked power driving in sand.

I would certainly not put a 1KZ engine in - they have a weak cooling system and are very prone to cracking cylinder heads. You also have the drawbacks of having to move engine mounts, maybe more, so if you're going to those lengths, better put in a decent direct injection diesel.

Something like a KD would transform the vehicle but you lose the spirit of a simple mechanical diesel engine. Also, is the rest of the drivetrain up to the torque put out from these engines? The old G Series transmissions are not the strongest.

I'm in half a mind to put a 5L in mine - it's still an old, low tech engine but will give a mild increase in power and requires zero modifications.

The head cracking on the 1kz's stopped by 2003. Everyone I know with one prior cracked the head, everyone I know who had a later one didn't.

Making a mechanical 1KD or hybrid 1KZ with 1KD head and pistons has been done. The 5L is same as you've got just 25% more cc.

I may be wrong but I don't think we got those later 1KZs in Europe - they are all the flakey pre-2000 type.

A mechanical 1KD would be something of a Holy Grail for a Hilux. But that's going to need plenty of money, knowledge, skills and access to machining capability I would assume.

TBH we would have been way happier getting the 1KD when europe got them in the late 90's. The 1KZ used more fuel for less power. There were a few build threads here on mechanical 1KD engines. IIRC one used combo Toyota/Mitsubishi injectors and a VP44 injection pump.

If youre going trough the hassle of putting in a 1KD you can certainly look at TDI swaps, maybe the holy grail of diesels, the BMW M57, but im not certain it can fit without majour modifications

The attraction of the old Hilux is surely how simple and mechanical it is (and the classis look without nasty moulded plastic in my opinion). If you ruin that with a computer controlled install, you lose this simplicity, plus you have all the electronics poked in awkwardly. You'll need to upgrade the transmission and probably use an adapter plate somewhere, change propeller shafts lengths, move engine and transmission crossmember mounts. You'll pay a lot for this, and lose the reliability and robustness of a factory made engine/transmission/driveline.

So your Hilux will not be a Hilux, it will have no value as a classic vehicle and most likely look like a s***ty home conversion that nobody wants to buy. Plus even if it is done well, what have you got? The old Hilux cabin on a frankenstein chassis. Why not just buy a newer Hilux, D Max, Armarok etc?

These Hiluxe's didnt come with a 1KD anyway, so what difference does it make that youre not putting in a Toyota made rubbish? The computer controlled engines remove the overly complex injection pumps and replace them with a robust, reliable common rail system. If you put in a 2KD/1KD youre still going to be using a setup which never existed from the factory and will have the same issues but they will probably be harder to diagnose as nobodys swapping toyota diesels, while M57 and TDI swaps are very common. Though i agree on the fact that a 6 cyl wont be a great idea, its just too long. Also i dont think most people care that their car isnt valuable as a class, so what? As to why not buy a newer car with a better engine, because its not interesting.
 
I'm advocating against putting any sort of computer controlled engine in, Toyota or otherwise.

Also, I say this in the context of offering advice to a new owner. If you specifically enjoy the challenge of significantly modifying a vehicle and are familiar with the scale of work required, and have no expectation to recoop costs, that something else.

while I don't really have a ton of toyota diesel knowledge/experience, the draw to me is the non electronic system.
the di systems have proven to be problematic and there is simply no way im going non Toyota powered.
these trucks are tractors, if you're expecting anything else, you should probably go a different direction.
while i really like(d) my 3.4L truck, random electronic failures were always in the back of my mind.
you can swap these to the R series trans and lose the shyt g stuff. you probably aren't planning duals so that makes the chain case a non issue as well.

I too, vote for the TDi, as the toyota diesels suck, and loads of people are swapping tdi's in to all sorts of stuff
 
another option i come across on this forum is 3B or 13BT, its 3,2litre diesel but im not sure about the weight if it wouldnt be too much for the axle since its land cruiser motor after al

Those engines are something like 200-250 kg. The 3B would not give much of a performance increase. The 13B-T is a great engine but spare parts are very hard to find. Both are 3.4L.

I've seen a 15B-FT put into a Hilux, but I don't think it's a good match, and hard to find in Europe.

Another thing, more subjective maybe, but the B engines are really bus/lorry engines and with heavy, slow shifting gearboxes, you lose that Hilux feeling of driving a car rather than a tractor.

Yes, I know, I have one. But the B engines were designed by Daihatsu for trucks.

The 5L only came in the Dyna 150 in Europe. You don't really need any other parts, you could take a bare 5L long-block and use all the 2L manifolds and ancillaries.
