Hey guys,

Wanting some advice…

Have a 1999 Toyota hilux with the 4 cylinder “5L” 3 litre engine. It was given to me a while ago and was smoking quite badly so I did the following…

Replaced the injectors with “refurbished” units from an online seller (not 100% sure of the quality), no change

Did a compression test, wasn’t happy with results so did a full rebuild including resleeving the block, new pistons, replacement head etc etc (essentially a full/total rebuild).

Still Smokey….

So had the injection pump rebuilt by a reputable shop here in Australia… no change.

Basically there is black smoke on start up and while driving, to the point where at night it looks like I’m “rolling coal” on everyone behind me.

I have also noticed that when lifting off the throttle/engine breaking there can be a lot black smoke as well.

Even after everything I have done the power never really improved and it feels REALLY slow, like absolute max speed is 105kph.

I’ve also changed fuel and air filters flushed the fuel tank, it’s easy to suck fuel through so I don’t think it’s a blocked line.

I am considering changing the injectors again given the first time was “cheap” but before I spend more money I would love some feedback.

Also, I have the proper tool for timing the injection pump and have checked it numerous times, I am almost certain it’s correct.

Anything else I am missing?

Cheers

That sounds very frustrating. Is it a mechanically controlled 5L, or a 5L-E?

It really sounds like a timing issue, Are you certain the timing pulleys on the crank, IP and camshaft are all correctly aligned?

I can't see it being injectors if the engine was smokey before and after putting different injectors in.

Any EGR or other throttle butterfly/restriction in the system?

Is it running evenly or are you getting misfires/lumpiness?

Does it use any oil?

Is the exhaust bent or restricted?

hi what colour is the smoke?
try advancing the pump timing a bit and see if it smoke less?

check intake. try driving with the exhaust disconnected. check to see if anything is adding load to the engine like dragging brake, drive line bound up, or something else.
