Can anyone point me in the right direction for a review, or give advice on the HFS suspension kit for a 74 FJ40?

Thanks.

hfs

i've installed one but have not driven it yet--what are you looking for how they ride or how to install?

I put these on my FJ60 with a 4x4 Labs rear bumper and the rear sits 4" lower than the front with a LS2 vortec engine that is about 150lbs lighter than the stock 2F. May add shackle extenders to the rear to level it up.

I’m also trying to find reviews for HFS lifts. Not a lot around here recently. The lift FAQ is pretty stale.
I would go with the Alcan Springs
I’ve seen Alcan mentioned around here. It seems like they would be expensive.

(Just noticed the OP was from ‘08! But still, hard to find reviews)

I’m subscribing because in suspension shopping as well - a lot of the reviews are 10 years old at this point so it’s tough to say what’s changed.

Hell Creek, for example, made springs, closed up shop, then reopened with a new manufacturer and I don’t think there’s been any feedback on the “new” springs.

Alcan, last I heard, ran about $200/spring give or take.

I don't have any real complaints about the HFS except they don't handle the extra weight of the 4x4 labs rear bumper. So will have to add extra lift extension shackles. As you can see in the photo it is substantially lower in the rear. I haven't added front bull bar or winch yet but they don't seem designed for a lot of additional weight over stock. Still have 3" clearance to bump stop in rear. I'm thinking maybe overleaf spring assist or coilovers in the rear. But ultimately need more weight in the front as front is too light.

Further to above and after researching, CCOT provided no help, I have ordered OME Heavy duty springs as the only viable solution. If you want my rear HFS springs they will be available cheap. I couldn't find any spring assist or addable leaves that will fix this. I looked at air shocks but it would overload the attachment points so not a good solution. Bottom line is HFS shocks are not designed for anything heavier than Stock.

I installed the 4" HFS kit on my 1970 and I absolutely love it!

How much weight over stock do you have on rear your FJ60? I have 4x4 labs bumper (150lbs over stock plus spare on rear bumper plus jerry cans), 38 gallon gas tank, Alucab RTT tent... My springs are totally flat and the shocks completely compressed to within 1-2" of total compression, and that is without camping gear stowed in rear. As stated above the front sits 4" higher than rear.

I’ve installed two 4” HFS lifts on FJ40s since 2017 and am very happy with the quality.

I think FJ40's being much lighter and not having overhung rear bumper put much less stress on rear springs. The FJ60 rear bumper sits 3.5 feet behind the rear axle so any additional weight in the back gets multiplied by lever effect.

@FJ60 guy you're really getting after HFS today, aren't you!

I have a 4" on my 40 with no complaints, I still have a 4plus rear swing out to add, but its level now.

So you purchased the HFS kit for your FJ60 from CCOT and they are not offering any support? No returns, no solutions, no nothing?

I’m no leaf spring expert, but could you not add a leaf? It sounds like you have an above average amount of weight?

If they ride level on a stock 60 then I do agree with CCOT, there is no way to sell a leaf pack that works for everyone.

CCOT offered zero support or interest. I looked at adding a leaf but found it difficult to find anything that would fit properly. Went to some off road suspension specialist here locally and the best they came up with was to go to OME heavy duty springs.

Based on what I've read here, I think your best bet is to order a set of custom spring packs. You'll need to collect some information first like your actual loaded weight per axle, detailed dimensions of the the current springs, and ride height. They should be able to help you figure all that out and there are videos on youtube as well. Alcan or Carrier Suspension came up on my google search. There are probably more options too.
