My 1974 FJ40 has what I think is an unusual tub and I don't have the full history from the PO. I am looking to the mud community for some input. The tub appears to be custom fabricated (handmade) from welded 10 gauge (.135") steel plate. In the photos you can see the .200" thickness, minus ~.0625" Rhino Liner  which I have estimated at about .135".
Also note there are no ribs on the fender wells or bed itself and obvious weld seams. This in addition to the smooth bends where the side panels meet the tailgate area leads me to believe this is all 10 gauge steel, not a series of patch panels.

Has anybody seen anything likes this before and have an opinion on the origin? I love the durability aspects but a little disappointed with non-OEM look. Also not going to win any races with the extra weight I am carrying around.

-Thanks

You don’t have lip on the fender , so it’s definitely aftermarket. It’s got a touch of rust so it’s not Aqualu (aluminum). Given your location I’m guessing it’s a big Wally (?) tub. @JohnnyC has more info on that setup. Supposed to be a burly tub.

Our '76 had similar for a while - my father worked at a shop that did milk tankers, so he had access to the big sheet rollers and metal brakes. When ours rusted out (the first time), the tub was all rebuilt with something like 12ga (?) steel in a similar manner to yours. It eventually rusted out AGAIN as it was a daily driver in WI, and it got a full new tub.

Believe it was poor Wally who made these tubs. JohnnyC is in North New York and Wally was not to far away. Would be in one of the states not too far away.

Is the truck from the northeast? Most likely a Poor Wally’s tub

It is from the NE, and steel for sure. The consensus seems to be that this may be a "Poor Wally Tub". Doing a quick search there are few posts referring to Wally but beyond that I am not familiar. Does anybody have more info, is he an I8MUD member?

Thanks all for the responses. I was certain I could rely on the mud crew to identify the obscure!

Yep, got it. I am a Southern VT Native, very surprised I have not heard of this guy--will definitely reach out. Thanks again for the info!

"Yah That me! That a 3/16” tub I built maybe 25 years ago. I am not responsible for the outside liner" -Wally
