heater core swap ? / FJ60 1986 version

Since I have a 5.7 engine and it has the normal GM layout....of one side 5/8 and the other 3/4 heater hose (hoses that feed the heater core , intake & return), I'm going to later on see about changing the one side on the engine to 5/8 since I have an adapter in the OEM style heater hose at the enigne to adpat down from 3/4 to 5/8. As I recall the hose feeding the water pump is 3/4. Not sure the impact but it would put me only dealing with 5/8 hose and no adapters. The 5.7 votec has an unusual fitting at the water pump in comparison to the old school 5.7 stuff. Plus I'm not a fan of how the heater hose comes over and gets rather close to the exhaust manifold.

This should answer most of the bracket questions.

thanks for posting. Hopefully I can wrap up this dash business soon. I did have a problem with one of the bolts that attaches the main dash cross-panel to the bracket where the steering column mounts. You have to remove the two m8-1.25 bolts just above the steering column to get that panel off, anyway seemed like no matter what I did, one bolt went in fine and the other wanted to be a pain in the #$@. Other than that I'm hopeing to deal with the bracket tomorrrow and see what I can do with the duct work.

thanks for the pics, very helpful and I'm good with the 3 main brackets based on the help. Any idea where this bracket (my post 57) to this thread. I've not found a picture on it so far?

Maybe I missed it..is that it...mounted to the duct tube as shown on posting 64 ...first pic?

The bracket on the duct in that photo is really small, smaller than the one in your photo.

I'll get the other brackets tightend down and then I'll try and look around for logical attachement points for this bracket I'm looking at in post 57. Its just too painful to start on teh next step and find out I need to take a bunch of crap off to get down to it. I'm at the point right now where I need to be sure where the noted bracket goes and then its time to install teh duct work, plug in the wiring harness where i can and then tackle the misc trim pieces and ac control head area along with cluster and dash pad will be last. Its gotten too #$%# hot in the shop and so likely I'm going to work on this thing in the evening or maybe early in the morning on weekends. Getting closer.

still looking for any tips on where the bracket in post #57 goes, hopefully I'll get most of the dash back together tomorrow. I'll see what I can figure out, this is a unusual shape, the time between taking this stuff apart and reassembly has burned me in teh @#$@...not a huge deal but rather than wast time if anyone can help on this bracket that would be great. I apprecate everyone who has posted notes and pictures, hope all of this will help out others too.

That bracket just doesn't look familiar to me, but it's been >3 years since I tore my '86 FJ60 dash apart to install the FJ62 dash. I'll look through my photos one more time.

You know what, it kinda looks like a bracket to hold a cable. Choke cable? Fuel door release cable? Mine is an HJ60 and has a throttle cable, and I sort of recall it being held by a bracket like this....

Not a fuel door release (FJ62 only) or throttle cable (FJ62 only), just checked the FJ62 set-up in my '86 FJ60.

choke cable? throttle cable related....

I think it might be item #21 in this graphic....related to the throttle cable. My truck had a cable you could use to control idle speed... so I know this is not a great pic or graphic but so far as close as I've seen. Look at the Fj60 tab then see part #21.

I'm pretty sure this is it, not sure why I removed it, but i guess it was in the way of something. So hopefully it will be rather obvious how it went back in.

SOR is calling it a pedal channel

Yep, that's it. It bolts to the outside of the pedal bucket on the right side. For some reason my '89 FJ62 donor vehicle didn't have one, IIRC it didn't have the throttle cable.

Ok, dash back together. Still some fine tuning to do and i'll need to take the dash pad off again and likley the a/c control head trim piece. I'm missing a few screws, but thats not a big deal....two screws on the far edge of the dash pad left and right. I'm missing some screws that hold that pocket in there by the a/c control head. I need at least one new or both new, the 90 degree vent parts that connects to the the tube running off the defroster and run to each side of the dash. One of mine is cracked and will not make a solid connection to the vent. I'm also reminded how crappy the glove box compartment is and my a/c control head trim is cracked at more than one place and what some call the clamshell on the steering column in cracked. Of course the dash pad is cracked in multiple spots.

short story is everything works and I don't have any extra parts so far that I know about. I've got to troubleshoot the a/c but I'm sure thats a wiring issue where I had to disconnect some things. My a/c has a relay on it and its been a long time but I think it was , anyway whatever the A/c is not working (compressor not engaging), which as noted in likely my fault until I have time to go look at the wiring on that (my truck has a v8). I also need ot get in there and clean up wiring (for aux electric fan, for gauges where radio was, for gugaes near hood latch rlease, and for radio and power seats). I have a relay that feeds the compressor to engage it....rather that using the yota wiring by iteself (I'm running GM OEM type A/C compressor which as I recall is a Sanden.

Screwing around with the A/c comes first. I think I'll deal with that next weekend. Functional and cold a/c is a priority...since I have all the gear and parts.

got it going today and drove around for an hour or so....did some hwy stuff...temps in the 90's, everything was good excpet I was cooking with no a/c...

I appreciate all the feedback and help. I also hope this thread and pics and narrative may help others dealing with the same thing.

I might have those defroster vent parts, post a photo and I'll check my stash. Also the screws you're missing.

I don't have a pic of the item right now, its under the dash pad now, but its the kind of 90degree plastic fitting that mates to the vent that blows defrost air on the window , side of dash , far left and right. I'll take a pic or two this weekend, as I hope to get the gauges wired up that reside where the radio once was.

well the short description is that one end of the part that is somewhat 90degrees is...round to accept the plastic hose, the other end of the part is rectangular in shape and it mates to the vent under the dash pad, one of the far left of the dash pad and one on the far right of the dash pad.

heater ducts and cable tab, guess I overlooked this on the SOR site, good reference for the duct work.
