Hi all,

I have a small pool of antifreeze below the front heater core and believe it may be starting to leak. Since I’d have to pull a good part of the dash anyways to verify it’s the core vs. a connection I’d rather just replace the core regardless. It looks like this is no longer available new either as OEM or a repro though.

What’s everyone doing nowadays for this? Is finding a radiator shop that can rebuild the only option? The FJ80 one looks dimensionally similar, but the tubing doesn’t.

Most people are installing a used/good core. You could also try to get yours repaired.

Make sure you measure your core dimensions before you order. I got lucky and managed to strip a few older
trucks for parts way back. I've got 3 different cores on my shop shelf and all have different sizes, really slight but
different nonetheless. I expect if you have any soldering electrical repair experience you could solder it yourself to repair.

My experience is to use a mild coolant flush solution before you remove it, flush the system completely before you
go after the leak. I also isolate the heater lines individually, I used my shop vac because it's low pressure and will
never damage anything and blow thru the lines of the heater by itself. If you have removed the dash and isolated
the heater assembly prior to this you should be able to pinpoint the leak prior to removal. This will help in what
you need to do.
Side note: The heater core in a 60 is stupidly with the outlets on top. This allows sediments to collect in the bottom
over time really diminishing the effectiveness over time. 40 series heater are opposite and the outlets are on the
bottom. Hardly ever have sediment build up cause they self flush. Once I got the 60 core flushed properly it
made an exponential difference to my heat output.

Thanks for the tips! It looks like used or rebuild is the way to go. Thankful the leak is small right now and the heat isn’t needed too much. I don’t plan on doing it until I put new carpet and sound deadener which will be a while, I just wanted ample time to plan before I get to that point.

I checked the seller on eBay and some of the reviews seem mixed. Not sure if I’d fully trust buying from there…

They list a Customer Service phone number. I'd just call and verify availability and how they will ship.

I went on this journey a few months back. Once I finally got it out of the truck, I took it to a local radiator shop with a good reputation. They had it rebuilt in week and back in it went. My preference, but I like giving local (to me) businesses a shot at things first.
Whatever you decide, good luck!
