ive always had heat under or around my console and I'm sure it's from the transfer case or? Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution? Thanks for any help

Could be the transfer case shift boot, or the steering column gasket/seal thing...

Transmission tunnels on 80s always seem to get hotter than most other cars. I lifted my carpets and laid 2extra layers of insulation on the floors and the tunnel.

What year? The early rigs with the fat transmission don't have very good airflow around them, so get hotter.

When I drove the '92 from Rexburg to Utah, in the winter, the transmission would pump out enough heat I wouldn't even need to run the heater to keep the interior warm.

And did that help or solve the issue? I've noticed the whole floor gets warm - Anything placed on the floor behind the front seats gets rather warm, more so on the passenger side so I figured it was a combo of the trans + cats.

The gear selector area of the console definitely the warmest though, borderline too warm to touch at times.

I did this too. It made a big difference to heat and noise transfer.
I used a 3/8 thick layer of foil lined EVA closed cell foam for one layer Tape all joints, seal around shifter, and make sure the boot is intact

I bet you the small "boot" the trans shifter linkage passes through is torn. It's gonna be warm regardless, but that small hole being open makes a big difference.

I used Dynamat and then 1/8 Dynaliner on top of the Dynamat.

This also should be replaced...

Hope this helps -

Cheers,

Neat job there.

I used something like this (random pic)
images (1).jpg

Bought at my local hardware.
A roll of 1/4 thick roof insulation 4.5' x 50' and a few cans of spray adhesive cost me less than one box of the dynaliner.
Plus the fill on both faces makes it more effective stopping heat and more durable. I also foil taped any joins.

Thermozite is pretty easy to work with as well. I haven't tested its effectiveness personally yet, but it gets high marks from others Mud folks. Once the AC is working I'll start driving the cruiser again and find out.

Yeah, so I'm currently in the process of sound deadening and heat shielding my floor. I read your post yesterday so I checked out my shifter boot and, by golly, it's cooked and falling apart where the linkage penetrates the floor. That will allow heat, water and noise inside.

I ordered the shifter assy boot today: PN 33555-60071. $77.xx from my local dealer. I didn't shop around because I want it quick. I've managed to talk them into giving me a permanent 10% discount.

wow thats almost double than my usual vendor
Boot Shift Lever - Toyota (33555-60071)

but thanks for the heads up to take a good look at that. whatever drink i put in the big hole of the center console get hot real fast. would love to cool that whole area down.

If you have your console out, but the shifter surround on, go for a drive and place your hand at the open area where the console connects. It is ridiculous how much comes through there.

I don't have much complaint about heat intrusion but the transfercase gear whine penetrates my floor easily. Will be using Rumble Mat and some insulation. The PO already added insulation but neglected the trans tunnel and under console area.

So if I don't care how hot things are in the truck, should be worried about a hot transmission? I was driving home from Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago on a hot day and I noticed the tranny shifter getting warmer than what would seem normal. The AT Temp light didn't come on and I checked the fluid and everything seemed fine and there were no issues while driving. Is it true that these trannys run a little warmer than what people expect? I had the A440f in my old FJ62 and I remember that one getting warm too, but I never had a failure or any trans issues on that truck.

Two A442f's both wih antempngauge tonthe pan and rarely ever see more than 140. That's wih no trailer. One of the reasons they last so long is that they do run cool.

I have never thought that my floor was hotter than to be expected. The tranny tunnel has no insulation until you insulate it.
