Sorry to hear your frustration. I say slap that rebuilt carb on and go from there. If you need to borrow a dwell meter I'd be happy to mail it out and loan it to you.

I find that focusing and completing one task helps motivate me for the next - no matter how small it is. When I have too many things going at once it is overwhelming and sucks the fun out of it. Also, getting it running was an important step, because no matter how crappy it looks or how long the to-do list is, one trip around the neighborhood makes it all worth it!

Looking forward to seeing Hard Ways up and running with those awesome coral seats.

Do you want a simple dwell meter (cheap on ebay- Chicomm) or something more elaborate?

Alfred I have a working dwell meter you can use, let me know if your coming up I'll drop it by.

Alfred

I am planning to go to BHCC this year with @3_puppies, either as shotgun or convoy. @Redgrrr made me a helluva deal on registration. ;) If you’re still stuck, maybe we can stage an intervention on the way.

I'd like to plan on this, if it all possible. Let's see how July shakes out. I'll mark the BHCC dates on my calendar so I remember.

Thanks for this, Larry. I will take you up on it. I'll get it form you next month, after I get back from Moab. I'm so jammed at work right now, I can't do anything immediately anyway. (Some of us still have to work for a living! :-) )

To all that have offered advice, thanks. I'm kinda discouraged, and was venting, I guess. I appreciate all the help.

It’s frustrating but remember that it’s only a toy and that you are fortunate to not have to get it fixed to make it to work tomorrow.

I remember those days! I never went ANYWHERE in my 40 the first two years I owned it without a full set of tools and enough extra time to deal with all the ‘deferred maintainance’ that kept cropping up.

I hear you, man. My DD is a '14 Tundra. It never draws attention to itself - just does it's job quietly and competently.

I'm glad I don't have to daily drive Hard Ways.

@65swb45 - I think the distributor is stock. I have photos on another device, and I'll get them up in a few minutes, If you think I should switch to a new distributor, please make a recommendation. We can talk by phone about options and cost.

I have new points, rotor and cap in the truck now. I have new plugs and plug wires not yet installed.

I also have the carb you rebuilt for me, not yet installed.

Should we plan on new distributor and new carb to go in all in one fell swoop?

:hmm:

@65swb45

Mark; thanks for the mention in the distributor thread. Looking forward to chatting with you and setting up a game plan for wrenching in July.

I been mulling over a small problem. When I put Poser rotors on the rear, the thickness of the rotor dictates a need for longer wheel studs. So I need wheel studs that match the stock studs and are about 1/4” to 1/2” longer.

Any ideas? Part numbers?

I rolled the 40 out yesterday. Gave it a shot of ether starting fluid, and fired it up. I drove it around a bit, which was fun.

On the 22nd of this month (that's a Monday) Mark Algazy @65swb45 will be here at my home to fix the problems I have been having with Hard Ways' performance. I'll be assistant wrench - as we adjust the valves, install a rebuilt carb, and a new distributor.

Alfred, I’m almost sure that info is in the faq.View attachment 2023446

I know aftermarket longer wheel lugs were being made in Australia. A search in the 60 series section would probably bring up a link. Thought about running later aluminum rims on a FJ40 and don't like the idea of one inch plus wheel spacers when need less than a half a inch.

Update:

Mark arrived today and we got to work on the ‘40 this evening. Impressive to observe as he put in a new distributor and adjusted the valves. I like the purist in his approach. Ignition system first, then valve adjustment.

This Land Cruiser, after a few hours of Mark’s work, starts better, runs better, sounds better, is better. I’m really amazed. He makes it look easy.

Tomorrow, we’re going to work on installing the rebuilt carburetor.

My son Reese has been helping, and learning. Very cool experience.
