I'm just realizing I need to torque the hub-to-rotor bolts. There's six bolts each wheel. Anyone know what the spec is on them?

What year disc brakes parts are you using?

From my earlier posts, you know of my intent to run Vintiques rims on this truck.

I researched the rims, and a review on the Summit site states that a customer runs these on his FJ40. I bought the rims (5) and I even test fit them on my buddy's FJ40. No issues.

But they don't fit this FJ40!

When I first posted the pic of them, @65swb45 commented on the backspacing. Well, these rims, the welds actually, bbaarreellyy touch the caliper. It's literally about 0.16" away from clearing.

So, I'll have to get a 0.25" spacer to get out enough to clear. Interestingly enough, 1/4" is the difference in backspace between my Vintiques and the factory FJ40 rim.
 
I borrowed my brothers welder today. I got figured out where to put my brake hose anchors. I also installed some new tie rod ends.

I put the rear cone on the transfer case. 3 of the 6 holes in the t-case have messed up threads. I may need to eventually invest in a new transfer case.

Unless you are running a rear PTO, those holes only need to hold the tin cover in place. There are many less invasive alternatives to replacing the case, starting with running slightly longer bolts.
 
Not sure what's the deal with the welder, but I can't seem to get it to work well enough to run a smooth bead.

So my buddy is gonna do my welding for me. So, I'm gonna put the front axle on hold, and pull the back axle. It also needs some tabs welded on. So, I'll plan to do the both of them together. I gotta pull the back axle, then load both axles onto my trailer, and get them over to my buddies place. That'll be a project for another day.

It's a nice Memorial Day here in Wyoming.
 
Ok. Welding appears to be the stumbling block. I can't weld it with what I have. My buddy's mobile welder is down right now. So I have to load up this front axle and bring it to him. So, I reasoned, since I also have welding to do on the rear axle, I may as well pull that one out.

If I get this one up on my bench, it'll be easier to open the cover, remove the C-clips, pull the half axles, and all that stuff. I also have new spring bushings to put in.

The axle now sits on the floor. I can't lift it but maybe my teenage boys will be able to help me tonight or Monday.

I'm enjoying this project but it's a challenge for me with my AS. Here's advice for you: don't get ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

The hallmark feature of ankylosing spondylitis is the involvement of the sacroiliac (SI) joints during the progression of the disease. The SI joints are located at the base of the spine, where the spine joins the pelvis.
 
It's a challenge sometimes. But life goes on. And I know that there are others who have worse trials than mine.

I'm having a great time with this FJ40.
 
Heater Hose question:

I'd like to bypass the heater for now, because it needs some resto work.

For bypassing:

A) Should I run a heater hose from the port atop the block to the port in the lower radiator hose?

B) Or, should I cap off both the port atop the block and the port in the lower radiator hose?

(I hope this makes sense.)
 
Go with <A> you need to insure flow thru the Head back to front.

To best of my knowledge, this is the first time these springs were off the truck since it was manufactured.

The military wrap is supposed to be at the fixed end, not at the shackle, correct?

I always thought it was meant to go to the front? On my 60 it faced the front. On photos of my 55 it looks like it's at the back so maybe it is right. Fixed end makes sense though.
 
I'm in bits & pieces mode til I get the welding done.

Was at the Toyota dealer today. They had YZZD3 oil filters for $5.50. That's cheaper than I found online. I grabbed one. Anyone know what that little washer is for? It was in the box.
