Working on rear axle. Opened pumpkin. Removed 12mm bolt. Removed shaft and block. Pushed half axles in. Removed C clips. Pulled half axles. Removed drum brake plates.

The seal here is sitting way outboard. I think the PO incorrectly installed it.

This seal on the other side looks correct. It's sort of tucked in a bit better.

I have used the hook style seal puller on inner axle seals up front. Can I use the hook on these?

Used the hook. Removed both seals.

Top photo shows different thicknesses of the seals. The thicker seal was on the driver side.

Center photo shows bearing on the driver side.

Bottom photo shows bearing on passenger side.

Notice how the passenger side bearing is farther back inside the axle tube.

Very odd that the two sides are so different.

I need advice from the gurus. @Poser @65swb45 can you give your opinions on how I should proceed?

Should I pull these bearings out and replace them?

@cruiseroutfit do you sell these bearings? Are they difficult to remove and replace?

In this photo, passenger side, my screwdriver is pointing at a steel ring just inside the axle tube. I think this ring is supposed to be what the bearing installs against.

This ring seems to be missing from the driver side. I think a PO removed this ring. Very odd. Not sure now how to proceed.

You can see from the races that the bearings are rolling in different positions on the axles.

It is clear that one rear wheel bearing was changed out. I wonder if the installer just didn't drive it in far enough.

If that's the case, perhaps I could just pound it in a bit farther?

I started off calling this truck the MP40. Cruiser Dan pointed out that that is the name of a gun. To avoid confusion, perhaps I should rename it.

I know  I'll call it Hard Ways since I seem to be doing everything the hard way.

Maybe I'm overthinking this.

Driver side bearing seems to be too far outboard. So, when it was installed, the installer didn't pound it in far enough.

Idea!! Pound it in a bit farther!!

I went out and grabbed a hammer and a brass drift and pounded it in a bit farther.

Done deal.

On with the show!!

I'm on vacation, spotty cell coverage, internet more so. Just saw the pics for the first time.

The washer missing from the one side is a slinger designed to help keep oil by bearings. Toyota changed their minds and eliminated it in '74, so I'd say it's not mission critical.

What does the race on the axle look like. The shallow bearing could be an accident, or it could have been to avoid a worn surface on the race.

Mildly curious why you would reach out to Steve and I on the tech, but Kurt for the sale.

Best

Thanks for your input.

The races on the axle look good to me. No obvious pitting or scoring.

It was odd to me that this bearing could seemingly be placed in a variety of positions along the race.

I'd love to know the story of how that ring came to be missing on one side. The bearings look different, too.

I have come to appreciate the info you and Steve share here on the boards. And I have also felt free to ask for it when I need it. Thanks for all of your help. When I was scratching my head over this rear axle yesterday, I thought it'd be nice to have some tech advice. I thought of you & Steve right away.

As to the sale part, I assume from your post that you sell bearings. Am I right? Over the last nearly ten years, I've bought parts from you, parts from Steve, and parts from Kurt. But I was not aware that you supplied bearings. Why didn't I know that? Not sure why. In fact, I'm not aware of the full extent of what you offer.

I made a start on plumbing brake lines today. I put in a few. The beginning of my rear circuit crosses right over the valve cover. Probably not the best layout. I'll probably re-do that one.
