As part of my top rehab project, I'm redoing the windshield mounting flange which wasn't in terrible shape, some rust through at the ends. I used a flap disc for most of it and that worked great. But there were more than a few curves, corners, and depressions that I couldn't get into. I fired up the $26 harbor freight 'spot' abrasive blaster and put on my new hood and it was the perfect tool for the job. I have a fairly typical 1.5 hp compressor with a 20 gallon tank. It's fine for the job. When the tank empties, it's not quite enough, but most of the time it supplies enough pressure. The harbor Freight unit tends to bridge in the hopper, but a shake and it's going again. Following the flap disc was perfect, as it allowed me to quickly clean up all the spots that the flap disk didn't get.
You can see the area I flap disced - it has diagonal looking stripes. The sand blasted part looks grey, almost like it's been painted with primer.
these are the worst spots at the ends
In the great tradition of LandCruiser owners in the past, I'm going to bury it in Rustoleum rust reformer and paint over in white to match the top.
