SILVER Star
Folks,
It's time to take your HAM license test and then pick up a HAM radio for trail comm. We're trying to get away from CB radios if possible. HAM radios offer much better range and quality of comm than CB radios (lots of thread on Mud regarding this topic). In the past, I've managed to speak to another mobile radio over 80 miles using radio to radio comm (simplex mode). The license test cost $13 and an eight year old can pass it (no pressure there)
All you need is the most basic Technician license and you're good to go.
This club hangs out on the 2M freq 146.460 & 146.464 mhz when we're doing trail work or convoying to destinations.
Most of us in the club owns Yaesu brand radios and that makes it easier for us to help each other out with programming, using, troubleshooting etc. These radios are complex units and can easily overwhelm the users. The manuals are written by PhD's and the menu structure is multi-level deep. One button typically has multiple uses
Some of us have programming software for ease of programming our mobiles.
For those of you with dual banded radios, let's pick a day and mod them to Rx/Tx FRS freqs (diode crush mod). At least this way we can comm with folks who own FRS radios and not CB radios. Most of us have spare FRS radios that we can hand out along with spare HAM walkie/talkies.
List of FRS/GMRS radio freq: Family Radio Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I can't seem to find the PL tones for the "subchannel" freqs. If you can find them, please post them up.
My favorite Yaesu mobile: FT7800 OR FT880 dual band AND dual radio. Basically you have two independent radios in one unit. Separate head unit that can be mounted anywhere you want. Check out this thread of mine: https://forum.ih8mud.com/electronic-toys/452831-yaesu-ft-8800-remote-head-install-twist.html
My favorite Yaesu handheld (handie talkie) - VX6R. Nice size, have freq buttons that you can punch in, traditional knobs for volume and squelch. Small but not too small so that you can lose it like I lose my VX3R all the time. Used prices are decent for the VX6R if you can find them.
We have a local shop that can help you with antenna and coax installation/parts purchase: specialty-home
Just did a quick search on Eham.net for Yaesu radios and came up with the following:
