Hi all, transplanting in an H55F into my HJ47 and just have a few questions for the group as I progress.

1) After removing the transmission and bell housing, I noticed my rear main seal was actually in what appeared to be pretty good shape, despite the fact that I have been leaking oil from the bottom of the bell housing for weeks. Upon further inspection I noticed oil leaking from the brass colored circular plug (red arrow in first picture). I wasn't expecting a leak here and therefore do not have replacement parts ready. Can anyone help me out with the procedure for repairing this leak and/or replacing this engine cap?

2) Is it customary to remove the plate (green circle in first picture) to install the rear main seal? I don't suspect this plate's seal is leaking, but while I have everything apart I'm thinking it may not be a bad idea to re-seal it with some silicone. Thoughts?

3) In the second picture, is this wiring with the white plug the reverse light switch? This was disconnected when I removed the transmission and might explain why I haven't had reverse lights since I took delivery of the Troopy. Where does it connect to? Can't find a plug for it...

4) In the third picture, what is this wire for and where does it go? The wire ends were disconnected prior to transmission removal as well.

Fourth picture just for fun.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

3 is the reverse light wiring.
4 is a sensor for the Tachometer.

Do not have a H/2H so can't help with the other two questions

#1 is your camshaft plug. You need to pop that one out and put a new camshaft plug in. 90331-55001 available from your Toyota dealer.

#2 You don't have to take it off. But if you do, there is a gasket behind it that you need to reinstall. 11383-68020 Make sure to have one on hand.

Beno, that's just the information I needed. Thanks for taking the time to locate the part numbers. Cheers.

My understanding was that split cases on H41s after some time in 1982 (I want to say October) will have the 5th gear oiler provision. Can anybody back me up? I'll be splitting the case today so I'll be able to see for myself regardless I suppose. (My HJ47 is a late 1983)

Thanks for the link. I believe I read through that thread (and a handful of others) prior to starting this project. The conclusion that I came to was a 12/83 manufactured H41 with split case would have casting for a 5th gear oiler. I simply needed the plastic oiler piece is all. I hope that's the case..

The split case from the 4 speed won't have a 5th gear oiler.

Think the four speed transfer will not have a fifth gear oiler but 10/82+ were cast to except the oiler. The oiler itself is a separate piece.

PS: if your finding something different in Australia here in the US we would be interested to know. None of our split transfer cases were imported attached to a five speed.

Curious about the inspection cover in your second picture, it looks to be flat like the pre 10/82 4X series. Matches the mustard color of your troopy. Part of the five speed conversion on pre 10/82 is dealing with the transmission hump. What market was your troopy from? Should be a data plate some where with a date. What is the date code on your transfer case?

For reference here is a 79-82 inspection cover on the left. 83+ on the right. Four and five cover are the same on 83+, opening for the transfer is further back on the five speed but shape is the same.

Thanks for the pictures. It would appear I do indeed have the 79-82 inspection cover, which is confusing to me given that my manufacture plate indicates the vehicle is 12/83. The stamp on the transfer case was stamped off center so is difficult to read, but what I think I am seeing is an "L", indicating December, but I cannot make out the first (number?). Still have no opened the case yet.
