Guess the only way to tell on the transfer case is when you tear it down. First digit could 0 2 3? Second could also be I being June. Interesting on the inspection cover. got a bunch of stuff from a 84 HJ47RV. Included in the parts was the inspection cover. It is the later style and had a H41 inside. That was over three years ago and was hoping for a five speed. Have since learned if any five speed came In any FJ45/HJ47 would have been added later or possibly a special order like a mining truck. I find no listing for either with a five speed.

Just checked the listing for the HJ47 in the Australian market. It shows part number changed 10/82 until the end of the 4X series. Shows the part mumber good for all models not just the HJ47.

Ok, if I understand you, you're saying the part number for the inspection cover changed in 10/82, correct? Really odd that I have the "old" one.

I show that part changing on all model of 4X series 10/82 in all markets. Having the old floor will require some mods for a five speed to fit. You at least have the HJ47 L brackets for the crossmember. The crossmember had a slight change 10/82 with a different part number. The later crossmember has a small hole I assume to drain water under the transmission. This is the easiet way I know to tell the two apart.

This floor is from 4/1983.

nogo, thank you for the picture. It appears I have a Frankenstein Troopy..? Manufactured in 12/83 but with old inspection cover, and after removing transfer case from transmission just now, it appears I do not have a 5th gear oil casting. Could somebody confirm? (Have only seen the oiler in pictures here on mud).

I don't know why I asked... clearly I do not have the casting for the oiler.

Gents, I'm in the market for a split case! Where is the best place to source them from?

That's a bummer!......I have one here built June 1983 that I'll pull down in the next few days, I'm betting it doesn't have the oiler provision either.

OEM Toyota are readily available new.

That said, you just need the front housing of the split case. I betcha you can find one used here on MUD or with one of the used parts vendors.

Thanks beno. I see that SOR offers a used case for around $1500. Is that essentially the going price these days? I can't afford a new case at (what's looking like) around $2500.

Having the wrong inspection cover means more than just finding the correct cover. The hump is different and the covers do not just switch between the two. The floor in front of the inspection cover is raised on the 10/82+. If the cover lined up to the hump either a earlier tub or part of the tub has been used. On a RHD 82 it will have dome light switches on the A pillars and a insert dash. Most obviously way to tell 10/82+ from a earlier 82 is the floor hump. I've been researching this for a while and still working on how to solve the raised inspection cover on my 79 FJ40.

Is the "hump" you are referencing just below the heater? Just snapped this picture of my access hole.

The area just in front of the inspection cover will be higher for most of the area under the heater. The picture nogo posted shows the crease on the left side where it changes height. That is the issue I'm dealing with. Picture I posted shows the 79-82 four speed cover like yours and a 10/82+ five speed cover.

Here is what the two covers look like from the front.

The one on top is the later one.

Wow, very interesting. It appears I have hit a roadblock in that case. My "12/83" manufactured HJ47 has some explaining to do. No idea why I have the older body. I can see no signs of repair/replacement work at all. Well I may be putting my 4-speed back in unfortunately...

Just figured I would repost some of these pictures from a thread back in '09 I had bookmarked. I may have a metal shop fab me up a new plate for the H55f similar to the one shown here.

I'm thinking with some clever mixing and matching of cross-members and the gearbox mounts, having to cut the front of the floor could be avoided.

Does your new five speed have a 40 series or 60/70 series top cover? I have the 40 series top cover and might fit different. My plan is to mount the teansmission using the motor mounts on the bellhousing, 79 still has the rear motor mounts on the bellhousing. From there will decide where to mount the L brackets. Clearance to the hump is a issue may to lower where I mount the L brackets for better clearance. Still looking to modify the hump but that isn't that easy.

Oh, you have a 40 series top cover? I heard those are hard to come by. I have a 60 series top cover on mine. With your plan, if I understand it correctly, the front two engine mounts would be angled down a bit more than they were designed. Think that would result in some premature wear on the rubber? Probably a none issue as it'll be so slight. I would also worry about driveline angles at that point as well. Again, most likely small enough an angle to not matter (maybe?).

I can see the 40 series top cover potentially being more of an issue than the 60 given that 3-3.5" slide back up towards heater on the 40 series.

Yes I have the late model inspection cover, four and five speed. My hope is to modify the floor to use the correct cover. Really not much difference in the clearance between the 60/70 series top cover and the 40 series cover as clearance. The reverse light switch is in the same location on both and transmission is in the same location. These were offered on the late model short and mid wheel base 40 series so clearance to the heater should not be a issue. Nogo brought up a good point about the mount under the transmission. The height of the different engines must be different. The rubber mounts have the letter of the engine there go with on them. As I remember the 3B mount is the thinnest which would lower the transmission on a 2H setup. I know on the F/B engines in the short and mid wheel the L brackets are the same before and after 10/82 even though Toyota gave them different part numbers. On the FJ45 and HJ47 not sure as I only have a set from a 84 HJ47RV and one set from a FJ45 of unknown year. Not sure why but the FJ45 and HJ47 use different L brackets while the FJ40 and BJ42 share the same ones.

Not that worried about a small change in driveline angles. Installed a four speed in my 68 FJ40 back in 94. To help with clearance to the floor in the back I installed a few fender washers on the front motor mounts to angle the back down a little. That never caused a problem. But hoping I can deal with modifying the floor since have collected so much from the later 40 series to it like stock. That includes the PTO, shifter and driveline from a 84.

My plan as of now is to source a tcase with oiler (SOR has one in stock - just the shell), cut the transmission hump as required to fit the H55f, and have a metal fab shop fit a new cover over top. Will send updates as I progress.
