small note, the date you got the 12/83 was from a compliance plate for the aus market, most (if not all) aus market delivered/shipped/sold to or in aus had to have that plate so they wern't always the correct build date for the vehicles (though from previous bought cars from aus dealers it is usually a moth or 2 difference)

great thread by the way. it will help me with converting my 47 to a h55 in near future cheers!

Thank you for that information. That puts my mind at ease a bit.

I will receive my modified shifters and inspection cover from the metal fab shop later today. First test drive with the new H55f tonight, if all goes well.

The compliance plate on the one I got parts from was 6/84. Would have to search some pictures on my computer but T case was April 84 from what I remember.

what did you do with the tunnel cover or what did fab shop say? i was thinking of measuring a rectangle that includes the stick hole and flipping it 180 to suit

Might be easier to explain once I get it back from the shop, but essentially, for the transmission shifter I had them cut a new circle out with the same dimensions as the old hole, and weld that circular metal plate left after cutting into the old hole location. For the transfer case hole, they're doing essentially the same thing. It'll look pretty rough when I get it back, but I'll sand and paint with factory color code once I get it back.

The whole thing will be covered anyways, so I'm not too worried about it.

Did you trim the area in front of the inspection cover to allow for some flex? My OCD is forcing me to go a little further than to install a five speed.

Have not done any more trimming. Will take a look at clearances once I get the plate back and make changes at that point, as required.

Had a pretty bad experience today and am looking for some advice. I'm on a trip in the Troopy. Had about a 3 hour drive a few days ago and halfway into the drive I started hearing a "whine"/high pitched noise (barely audible over the engine/wind noise) that would go away with clutch pushed in and in neutral. I pulled over to inspect and didn't see anything odd. I chalked it up to me being overly sensitive. Still bothered me a few days later (and was still hearing the noise) so I checked the transmission fluid level and it was nearly empty. Checked the transfer case fluid level and it was FULL. It came GUSHING out. In fact, the transfer case had developed a few leaks as well (maybe due to the high pressure in there).

I'm in the process of a move and need to take this thing across the country in a few days. Don't have access to any of my tools except the essentials I carry in the truck. I replaced the transmission fluid, tranny shifts smooth as butter, but I still hear that high pitched whining sound.

Did I cook something in there? A bearing? I perhaps put about 100 miles on the transmission with essentially no oil in there. Is the thing toast?

I'm taking it the dealership tomorrow (kills me) and I'm going to have them tear open the tcase and inspect the tranny/tcase seal. Otherwise, I'm at a loss as for what to do.

do a search for bypass hose

Thank you. I actually did read about the bypass hose. For now I will install a new seal. I'm more worried about the strange whining I'm hearing from the tranny now.

This is strange since the oil usually migrates to the transmission. I have no search function on my cell phone. But seems I remember something about a hole that possibly needed to be filled on a four speed case used on a five speed. Only have a used five speed that came with a transfer case mated to it so I know it's correct. Because I have mated set never played that close attention. Reason I would check this is when oil migrates to the transmission the over flow tube allows it to drain back to the transfer case. Unless I'm mistaken the transfer fill plug is lower than the fill plug on the transmission. If that is the case the bypass hose really only works one direction. If there were the same a small hole between the two would solve the problem except if one has a issue and comtaminates the oil both would get that oil. But a bypass would do the same. Just reaching for straws and figure worth checking out. New H55F aren't cheap.

Thanks for the help. The case I got did not have that hole that needs to be filled in. The Troopy is at the dealership. They're going to tear into the tcase and transmission and do some investigating .going to cost an arm and a leg but it's my only option at this point.
