H55F swap assistance (oil leak, frayed wires)

Right, of course. Just wondering if I'll have clearance issues.

Ok gents, transmission is in. Had to do MINIMAL cutting, and it appears I will be able to use my stock inspection cover (without hump). The key is the transmission mounts. "F" transmission mounts are a bit shorter than the "H" mounts and yield just enough clearance to be able to reuse a pre 10/82 transmission hump inspection plate. One minor cut must be made. Please see pictures.

Of course, the inspection cover holes for both shifters must be "moved" back about 3", but that really isn't too cosmic.

I would a put straight edge on the left side of the hump and sliding it front to back. Obviously hit the shift tower but would check clearance along the rest. Because of flex created by the motor mounts need some clearance to account for that. When I added a four speed to my 68 FJ40 I used a 75/76 transmission tunnel because those are higher since the four speed is higher. You might want to find the B engine mount.

Great point. Thank you. Did not account for flex whatsoever.

Great info.....thanks for posting

Let us know how you go with the clearances as i'm looking to a 5 speed swap in the not too distant future :)

Well, running into a bit of an issue when filling my transfer case with oil. It's just pouring out of the back. Pictures taken with the drum removed obviously, but was leaking like this with the drum on. Incorrect sized output seal? I took it all apart and seal is brand new (came with the rebuild kit). What am I missing here guys?

I guess that could be it. Thanks for the link. Here is the seal:

I can't even feel any grooves, however... Really odd. I mean, when I say it was leaking before, I mean a steady stream of oil. Emptied itself in 3 minutes. So there is a REALLY big gap between the drum and the seal.

Yes, I think this is the issue. Looking at the thread you linked, orangefj45 says "yup, the rear seal for the split case with the ebrake setup is the same as the rear seal on the earlier fj40/45/55 one-piece t-case. it's smaller in diameter than the non ebrake split case version."

Well damn. Need to find that seal now..

Thanks nogo. You saved my butt. Have a *correct* seal on the way.

Yes, it is. Tiny little gearbox that adds 10%. It is a great little unit, but it is outrageously expensive. With my personality though, I can't stand to see the speedometer off and just had to fix it.

On 255/85 for the record.

Custom shafts from Tom Woods arrived today. Great quality equipment. Here is front. Clearance with stock HJ47 crossmember is a non-issue. Stock shaft zerk fitting on double cardon was making contact with crossmember but new shaft is fine.

Not sure the H55F was ever used in any LWB 4X series which I believe is the only wheel base that got the double cardan on a driveshaft. Have the driveshafts from a 84 HJ47RV that has the double cardan up front and the cage that inclosed it.

I do NOT have that drain hole. What's that tell me?

The lack of the hole tells you it is pre10/82. Those do not have as much clearance for the front driveshaft. 10/82 it changed in all 40 series not just ones with a five speed. Have the one from a 83 BJ42RV and 84 HJ47RV. They are the same. I know the L brackets for the short and mid wheel base stayed the same. If the HJ47 and FJ45 did I'm not sure. My FJ45 L brackets are from 8/80+ is all I know. HJ47 are from the 84. Was surprised how much different the HJ47 are FJ45. Thought they shared the same frame. HJ may be bigger for weight or torque reasons.

That's all really interesting. Yet another <10/82 part on my 12/83-stamped HJ47.

Did you have a front disc brake axle? Those were on the 83/84 in Australia. When I picked up parts from the 84 I got the rear full floater and front disc brake axles.
