Hey mud!

I have my sights set on a H55 conversion and need some t-case advice...

My current setup:

1988 fj62 with 3FE and 4 speed manual (transmission and transfer case from an '84 fj60)

the current transfer case seems to be nice and tight, and works great. It is all mechanical linkage also.

I have access to a H55 with vacuum transfer case. Even though my current setup has a transfer case with likely the 34 mm idler shaft, wouldn't it be more simple to just run the H55 in front of my current transfer case, instead of "converting" the vacuum driven case?

Any input is greatly appreciated...

cheers!

Joel

I am not sure, the previous owner did the manual transmission conversion down at the shop in Atlanta.

I want to keep the mechanical linkage, do not want to do the vacuum set up

Thanks

Well, yes, it would be simpler to just install the H55 and your existing t'case, but you will have to disassemble and modify the t'case anyway to accommodate the 5 spd. The FJ62 T'case is a stronger case with other improvements and worth the conversion, but a rebuild kit and the conversion kit (from Kurt) will prolly run about $400...

With your current transmission do you have a spacer between the transmission and transfer case? If so your t-case shift linkage will work with the H55F. If not you'll have to source the parts for the longer t-case linkage.

I do not have the spacer in-between the transmission and case. In this case, I should run the transfer case that is currently connected to the H55 I have sourced? It needs to be converted to mechanical, or like @tmxmotorsports said I could use my vacuum solenoids and plug it right up (generally speaking)....?

thanks guys

You don't have the spacer and the H55F will have the spacer. If you run your current t-case (you'll have to disassemble it to mount it behind the H55F) make sure that the front half of the case has the indentation for the 5th gear oiler.

Your current mechanical linkage will not work so you'll have to source t-case linkage from a later FJ60, '85-'87, or go with new parts if still available.

Or run the t-case that's on the H55F but convert it from vacuum to manual but you will still need the later FJ60 t-case linkage.

What he said👆👆

Ok good stuff guys. Gives me some good framework for the project ahead!

Your current t'case may not even have the provision for the 5th gear oiler, depending on what was sourced. You really won't know until it's taken apart.

You *may* even have an issue with your driveshaft lengths, depending on what has already been done.

Crawl under an take a pic of your current setup.

A bit greasy... Here she is,

thx!

hard to see in the pic, but it looks like all the parts from an 81-84 FJ60 were used, crossmember being a 3 piece unit. so it may have a DC front driveshaft which isn't necessarily needed for the longer H55 setup.
you can use the existing crossmember but need to use the correct corresponding isolator.
and as stated either driveshaft mods or get 85-87 driveshafts
you could modify the vacumn shift to manual, but finding the correct linkage, $200ish for the correct linkage, or go twin stick, but either will require disassembly of the transfer case to modify.

So what is the most efficient use of my parts...

H55 with reconfigured vacuum case

H55 with existing tcase with ‘85 and newer linkage

The transfer case you are getting with the H55, is the shifter for the transfer case
included? Contact @orangefj45 Georg - can you offer up some advice here?

Something else to keep in mind is the low range gear ratios are different between the 4-speed and the automatic transfer cases.

problem is, you don't know exactly what you have currently. you need to make sure your existing transfer case would have the indent for the 5th gear oiler, without that, you shouldn't use it with the H55. even if you can use it you still need a rebuild kit and the later 85+ linkage
you can remove the pto cover plate and see if there is an indent on the front half of the case, behind the input gear.

easiest might be to use the H55 with transfer and make setup for the vacumn shift.
