Hello I have a 2021 gx460 premium. Lifted with eibach protruck coilover, adjusted to 2 inch lift. Stock everything else. Can hear a metallic clunk/click noise occasionally, perhaps from front driver side. Kdss piston? Cant figure it out please help thank you.

Clicks and clunks are part of the game with lifted trucks that see offroad time. Not saying it’s nothing but I got a few of those sounds going as well. Have you checked your ball joints? Kdss bushings?

Yeah bushings and ball joints look good. Everything torqued to spec as far as I know including the LCA cam bolts to like 129 or 130ft lb. Only has 15k miles we are first owner. It seemed more apparent after one day I went over a dip too fast..?

To eliminate the KDSS suspicions can you just remove the KDSS bar and drive around? I'm not familiar with the function of the KDSS and wonder if the system would freak out with the bar removed.

Noises like that on IFS trucks are SO hard to diagnose, since there are literally dozens of very likely sources for them. Bushings, TRE, ball joints, sway/KDSS, nuts/bolts, bearings, even loose skid plates, etc.

Seems like too low of miles and too new for bushings to have gone out, but a few more details would help.

  1. Did it happen before the lift?
  2. Did a shop install the lift or did you?
  3. Did the lift include new UCA's?
  4. Have you been under the truck for a good visual and grab-and-shake?
  5. Are you sure it's the front?
  6. Checked coilover bolts and nuts.
  7. Grab a gopro off marketplace for cheap, and get a magnetic mount off of Amazon, and go for a long drive, getting pics of various suspension parts in action...
  8. Have you done/had an oil change recently? Kinda sounds like a loose skid plate rattling around.
But number 4 is probably the first order of business. If you take it to a shop, they're just gonna start throwing part$ at it...

Did not hear it before the lift. Or at least didn't notice until later. A shop installed for me. It has stock UCA. I do my own oil change and make sure skid plates are tight. Sounds like front for sure because when I go over dips the front compresses will make that noise while rear is silent. Brought to one shop and they put it on the lift and visually checked nuts and bolts and tie rod ends said everything good.. I'll try looking into a gopro. I'm guessing it's kdss piston...something internally jus clunk and clanks?

It's possible, but a normally functioning KDSS system doesn't clunk and clank.

I have the same sound on mine. Lifted on Ironman FCP. Pretty sure it is the kdss because of the extreme angle on the bracket flexing the bushing. Probably need the Dr KDSS bracket, but I just ignore it.

How much lift you got on yours? Ours is 2 inch lift. I didn't think that would be too extreme to require dr. kdss bracket. And does yours make the noise consistenly? Or roughly half the time like mine?

2.5 inch lift. You can look at the mounting point on the lca and tell if you need them. It looks fairly obvious on mine. The clunk happens basically all the time. I think.

He makes slotted brackets that do alleviate some of the angle. I don't have the plates yet - but here are some pictures from when I installed them so you can compare. It's roughly a 2inch lift. I also have a slight clunk I'm trying to diagnose, but it was dead quiet when I first installed the suspension. Probably due to the few trips I had in between then and now.

Yes ours was dead quiet when first installed lift too. Then some maybe 5k or 10k miles later started to notice the clunk sound. But I think it started to happen after one day where I went over a dip too fast and suspension maybe bottomed out. I don't know.

Yeah I would begin with the sway bar mounting points. I reset mine yesterday, by loosening all of the mounting bolts, and moving the suspension around. Make sure the front pistons are pushed all the way into the flanges on the swaybar, toward the center of the vehicle, and retightening everything to spec after you've gotten the vehicle level. That seems to have removed some of the noise for now. I would also consider the brackets and collars from Dr. KDSS.

In the driveway, can you and a heavy friend bounce one front corner then the other to see if you can get it to "clunk"?
If so, get a third person (or you) under the corner you hear it come from and see if you can locate it when they bounce again.

My front KDSS shock is super clunky; I think I may have damaged the internal piston/rod off-roading. Changing direction or pretty much any form of movement makes itself known. It doesn't seem to cause any driving issues other than it's quite annoying; I need to change it, though.

Do you have any KDSS light on the dash indicating any issues? Or works fine other than the clunk sound

There are no lights or leaks, either. Everything is working fine, just rather annoying. My shop said it looked like I somehow damaged the shock itself internally. I need to find one from a crashed car, as brand new ones are quite expensive.
