GX460 spare tire carrier options - bumper, hitch, swingout, etc? (2 Viewers)

The ideal setup is something like what JW is working up with their hidden built-in swingout but somehow incorporated into the rear door itself. Maybe a mashup of the door-mounted carrier plus the swingout to help support the extra weight.
And this is the exact reason why this bumper is far and away #1 on the list for me.

But above all I wish this guy would sell his design.

That Exp One is nice but prices out for me at $3,500 roughly with shipping. The Coastal bumper and JW kit were about half of that price, and I don't have to dick with a swing out every time I access the rear door.

Or this guy, roughly the same idea.

I want to replicate this but need to learn how to CAD model and then weld. So all of the steps.

Exactly-- agreed on both accounts, and agreed with @BigSwede as well. $3500 plus shipping is a wild amount for a bumper, and while I expect the quality of the Expedition One kit is fantastic considering the cost, it was well out of budget for me.

Now that my GX is lifted and on 285/70/17s, naturally the spare needs a new home. I'm trying to pin down every possible option for carrying a spare tire that isn't a) in the OEM location (since my 285/70/17 doesn't fit), b) on the roof, or c) in the GX460's cargo area. I would also like to retain the rear window's ability to open, as well as the rear door's ability to swing open.

After hours of research, the options I'm finding are:
  • Already built full replacement bumper -- $$$$ (Ranging from $2000-4000)
  • Weld-it-yourself full replacement bumper (Coastal Off Road) - $1400 + $205 shipping
  • Wilco Hitchgate - $1200
  • RIGd UltraSwing - $1,500
  • JW Offroad - $899
  • Detours of Maine -- ??
  • Home-brew concoction, combining a hitch-mounted swingout (a la Wilco or Saris) and adding a hitch-mounted tire carrier (Curt) to it -- $250-750

Am I missing any options? Clearly over-thinking this already. Retaining the ability to tow is fairly important to this project, which makes the last option hard to justify even if it is the least expensive. Departure angle is also a consideration, but price is the most crucial item in my quest for a spare tire mount as the price of a full replacement bumper makes it a non-option. Curious to hear if there are any other inexpensive ways to go about doing this, or if the JW or Wilco/RIGd are the best bet.
Rigid Armor $1200 for Lexus 470 but works for 460

That is pricey also taking into consideration that it's ONLY the spare tire, no HiLift mount, Jerry can racks, etc. Not that you may want them or not, but for that much $$$$, you can have it all.

And that's the infuriating part. It would be extremely easy for any other company to make a competing product for less. I'd love a Victory rear bumper to match my front one, but alas.

Totally different from what we're discussing above, hitch-mounted carriers work for some applications but not for all, and doesn't integrate into the door
That's right-Rigid Armor is a hitch-mounted carriers just like the Wilco and the Rigd that you listed. Just wanted to throw without there since you mentioned "Am I missing any options?"😉

Understood, but I started this thread in April of 2022 and have long since been running the JW carrier.

The dollar-per-extra-fraction-of-an-inch-of-spare-tire-size in the GX 460 market is SO over the top. I refuse to play.

Also since you are in the rust belt....any feedback on rust?? Might help my original question like 50 posts ago lol. Still in the market. JW apparently are releasing a frame mounted carrier, but if it's not tethered to the door then I see no benefit .

How are you liking it, now that you've had some time with it?
So far so good. I added the hinge shims for extra support but no issues with rattling or bouncing. Don't think I'd put anything bigger/heavier than a 285/70/17 on there, not because of structural integrity worries but because if the truck is pointed downhill at all, it's fairly tough to open the door with all of the added weight.

The only rust I've had is on some of the hardware they used. I emailed asking for replacement screws and they sent them a few weeks later. The frame-mounted carrier if somehow integrated to the door would be the best of both worlds, but not holding out hope for that.

Aaaannnnddd you just answered the other question I had. Thanks.

I have a 35x11.5x17 on my JW, it is acceptably manageable in my opinion. My wheels are flow forged, so are about 8 pounds less than a standard cast wheel, which helps a bit.

With the door essentially resting on and supported by the Coastal rear bumper, I am optimistic it will hold up to the weight.

This is true for regular bumper swingouts as well. Especially if they have hi lifts, ladders, Jerry cans, etc.
