GX460 spare tire carrier options - bumper, hitch, swingout, etc?

Not sure what others use their vechicles for....
Just curious how well the door hatch mounted tire carriers will hold up to the abuse of desert trails? My 80 takes a beating going over these roads at 50-60mph. The shakes and vibration is violent.
My intended use of my GX470 w/315 tires will get abused the same way as my FZJ80. And will be used for these trips and swing outs(Dissent offroad) to me is more stout.
I don't think there's any argument that a carrier bolted onto a large spindle welded to a bumper bolted to the frame is always going to be "more stout" than ANY kind of mount bolted through sheet metal and braced on the inside relying on hinges for support. Having said that, reports of "verified" failures are rare, so maybe it's "stout enough"? While swing outs are obviously stouter, they come with a huge usability disadvantage for daily use. If your GX is not a DD, then that probably doesn't enter into the equation. If you DO daily the GX, or worse yet, your wife DD's the GX, then a swing out is a non-starter, at least for me.

It IS good to have options, and I dislike having to deal with a swing-out (been there, done that) for the overwhelmingly vast majority of the time that I'm not off-road, yet still want to get into the back. For that, the JW and Prado options would top my list. But still, at $667.00 or more per 1/2 inch of spare tire ground clearance, I'm a hard pass. For not much more, you could go Expedition One, and get a bumper and swingout tied to the door, and have rear armor as well as "just" a spare. Personally, I'm also fighting garage space clearance issues, and a Prado/JW solution are the best for that.
Yeah I hear that. I'm still waiting to bite the bullet on anything. Baby coming next month and driving 3000mi round trip end of the year with a baby and two dogs with 3 weeks worth of gear...a GX might turn into an LX . Been hesitant on anything further than what I have into it, but I'm a sucker for OEM engineered options. Now that the spare is shoved under I'm good for the time being until I have to rotate tires again. Eventually kicking the spare and bringing a tire patch kit and AAA membership might be cheaper than a bumper.

Given all the options, I am still in the waiting for an Expedition One bumper when the truck is half paid off. Especially with hearing that the JW is that prone to rust.

Order it now and it should arrive by then. I ordered mine back in December with about a 20-week lead time. Should be shipping out any week now!

Honestly, what stops me from ordering the ExOne is the lead time. With the number of companies that have folded shop after taking people's money, no way in hell I'm getting in that line. I'm still working on Kevin at SSO to start producing his Lexus bumpers again and do a single integrated swingout for the 460's like he had for the 470's.

Anyone here pre-order the new JW swing out? Excited to see these come in and be readily available.

Was waiting for this to come out, but do not like the final design. It needs to be tethered to the door for the amount they're charging, might as well buy a full bumper for that price. Not to mention it deletes the tow hitch completely.

Well put, these were my thoughts. All that money and no rear protection.

Agreed on all counts, but I think it said you could mount a factory tow hitch after it was installed?

If you can find an OEM hitch... Do think an aftermarket one would work though. Either way, wish this new offering was a little more robust for the money.

You mean the OEM hitch that everyone that would buy their product removes? Yeah I read you can put that in, but why am I getting a integrated tire carrier for better departure angles to then stick the OEM hitch and destroy that? I'd rather buy a Nguyen Works if I'm deleting the hitch, it costs the same anyways...Or get that Prado Door replacement  since it at least solves the 1 handed movement issue.

This is the problem when you get fab guys together and create a following on social media, the people that aren't makers only see cool stuff and the actual people that use real world problem solving skills see through their faulty design work. There's a difference between creating seamless products and just making stuff and JW is on the making stuff side. I like some things they make, but there isn't a whole lot of real world problem solving going on behind the scenes. And if you're critical online you are just blasted as a hater lol.

I did. Waiting for it to come in. I was deciding on the whole Prado door swap or not...and then this came out the day I was going to pull the trigger on the kit.

I hate how crappy the reverse lights are, AND I have a Rigid chase light, AND where I live uses fracking brine from time to time on the roads, so I didn't want to add a hole to my stock rear door.

The Ascend Fab bumper looks nice but as I still have a warranty, and without DOT or whatever crash testing, I had zero interest in hacking out the rear crossmember to install.

I have been told 5/20-ish. I expect/hope to be doing this on Memorial Day weekend.

Wow, that's pretty cool! Only issue I see is: can you use a receiver hitch?

Yes. The story is you could use the little 5k one (like I have, and all I need) but also use the OEM hitch as well. I will know soon enough.

Curious to get your thoughts on this once it shows up.

I’m in the same boat as most here in that there aren’t a lot of great options. Thinking for my use case this could be the least bad way to go, maybe tie in some DOM at the bottom somehow for bash protection.

Stilllllllllll waiting. Thinking the same thing for bashin'.

May have missed it.. but what does Expedition One offer that is remotely close to $700?

Ran a Rigd Ultraswing for about 6 months but just took it off and put it on Marketplace. It's a great piece but I was continuously beating the hell out of it. Going with an 80% Offroad tire carrier this time.
