I agree that a set of four is ideal. I keep two on my rig all the time and I have another two in the garage for when we're out the the trail, I'll throw the extra two in back.
But again, I have front and rear lockers, MTS and a winch, so I'd have to be in pretty bad shape to not get myself unstuck.
Meh, MaxTrax are definitely nice, and I don't doubt their efficacy. But I wasn't joking when I said I've had worse driveways than that. Most of my recovery gear stayed stowed away while I shoveled. I didn't even change back into my boots, opting instead to shovel snow in my sneakers. I've had to set up a tent in the snow next to a stuck vehicle. I've even had to hike 15 miles to pavement to hail a 60 mile tow into Ely, Nevada where I spent the next 9 days trying to get our rally car's clutch replaced. This was nothing. Just a little reminder that the stakes are higher than before.

Do you have MTS and/or CC installed? Wondering how the "snow/mud" setting might have worked, or just CC to back out?

I do wonder if MTS could've gotten me out of this, or better yet kept me moving in the first place. A-Trac had been buzzing all day, more in the sand down at Dove Springs than in the snow up on Piute Mountain. I probably would've used every mode MTS offers in one day, so that's fun. I don't know much about Crawl Control except that I tried DAC again on Sunday and ended up riding the brakes lightly just to shut the darn thing up. I really hate DAC. It might save my bacon someday, but not if I avoid using it in the first place.

MTS is still high up my shopping list, even higher than MaxTrax, but it'll take some convincing before I install CC.

DAC is 3 mph min. CC is one. That's 6 seconds for every rotation of a 32" tire. It makes you seem like you're glued to the ground on descents, whereas mucho skidding in 4lo/1st and manual braking. I posted a video comparison a few pages back in the MTS thread (Here) of same trail, w and w/o CC.

Yeah, that's impressive. Are you just steering with the robot handling the throttle? I just find it so disconcerting to not be controlling the throttle/brakes. But getting up the hill is better than getting stuck and I'm a clumsy meatbag human. Food for thought. In the meantime, here's another pic for the pic thread.

Before we had our GX we had a 17' TRD OR Tacoma that I bought new. Used crawl control many times with that truck, it was definitely not a gimmick. In the snow there were multiple times I tried going up icy hills out on trails slow, fast, 4Low, 4High etc and just couldnt get the truck up. Engaged crawl control and it would go up the hill first time like the ice wasnt there. Used it many times on long decents down ice covered hills and worked great for that too.

Im not sure how good or bad CC is for the GX versus the Tacoma. My GX and Tacoma were the same year and the GX just feels ancient in comparison so im guessing the CC for it would not be as advanced.

That ascent was just MTS with me on the throttle. I was just trying to get some "moving" pictures into the picture thread, ha! It IS weird at first to not be on the pedals, and at the lowest setting, it sounds like a machine gun going off with all the actuators...actuating. The faster speeds sound a little better. Honestly, after install I engaged it on the street in front of my house and thought I broke something it sounded so bad.

MTS and CC should be the same on both. The only difference may be that on older models CC may only be 3 speed options instead of 5.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I know the earlier 200 series Landcruisers only had 3 speed CC and the newer ones have 5 speed.
Other than that, form, fit and function should be the same between both 4R's and GX's.

Aired down to play in the ice. The trail was steep and slick in some sections. Forward movement never stopped but I cut my losses and turned around before getting stuck. I neither aired down all the way or was super motivated to push the limits too hard. Turned around and headed back on the paved road to get to the local pizza place before they closed.

Getting stuck, would be minor. If you're saying that parts were steep, slick and icy, I'd worry more about sliding into something, or worst, off of something!
Good call getting out when you did. We don't buy our rigs to push the envelop of what they can do and destroy them, but to enjoy, over and over again.

To start off my GX460 build, I pieced together my own roof platform from LFD Off-Road and Facebook Marketplace.

I started with some of LFD's crossbars and mounted a Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform to it. The crossbars have plenty of mounting options as they are meant to slide and extend to fit the factory rails in any position. This leaves a perfect slot for bolting to. I believe the platform was intended for a Jeep Wrangler, but I like the extra width the rack gives me for our long-term travels and for getting awnings, showers, curtains, etc further from the curvature of the body.
