I am rebuilding my knuckles. The kit (SOR) came with new felts for the ring that seals the rear of the hub. How the heck do I get the new HUGE felts into that skinny slot in the ring?

The felt does not fit into a skinny slot...they cover the rubber rings, that cover the metal rings...that tuck into the back side of the knuckle...

I assume your referring to what SOR calls (Fax felts and retainers)?? If so, just work then into the retainers with a screwdriver until they are fully seated and then press farther against the surface with the screwdriver handle.... then fit over the hub several times before assemble to make it easier.......

Very good catch Grant...

He is working on drum brake knuckle components.... :)

Ya Grants got it. I am working on a 69 drum brake setup (sorry forgot to mention).
I know where the felts go on the back of the knuckle.
This one goes inside the ring that gets bolted to the face of the knuckle.
The rear of the hub spins inside it.
It is way thicker than the groove and I am having a hell of a time.
May just use the old felts as they still seem to seal ok.

I messed with the new felts until they started to fall apart then gave up.
Slapped some grease on the old ones and popped em in...hopefully it will keep the grease outta my new brakes!

The trick is to use some wide flat nosed pliers (like electricians side cutters) to compress the felt as you tuck it into the rings with a small flat screwdriver. It helps to either clamp the ring in a padded vice or to have a helper.

I had no problem with mine. I media blasted the rings after ripping the old felt out and had the rings powder coated. After a few minutes of coaxing, the felt went into place. I think it just demands patience.

Of course I converted over to discs, so those very pretty things are sitting on the shelf waiting for some Mudder to need them. :D
