What kind of vinyl are you using for hood decals? Can you do a matte finish overlay for those?
Can you die-cut stickers?
I have a couple projects coming up...might as well try to get the business to a fellow cruiserhead.

Hey Man,
Thanks for the follow-up. As far as vinyl, my preference is Oracal 651. It is a nice mix between durability, looks and lifespan. It is guaranteed to hold its color, shape and overall function for 6 years in any outdoor conditions. In my experience it lasts as least twice that, but I am not sure because signs I made 15 years ago are still pristine. For something that is not exposed to the elements like a garaged vehicle or indoor application the 651 is way overkill and according to their rep, it would last until my grandchildren's grandchildren tear it down.
Ok, so that being said, I can and will use anything. I don't buy enough volume to qualify for any loyalty discounts so I am a vinyl whore. I just don't like to use the cheapo brands because quite frankly, they suck to work with and they turn this hobby into something not fun. Oracal and Avery are great, and I am sure there are other good brands too.
To answer your questions specifically,
You cam use whatever you want for hood decals. The vinyl can be ordering in matte, gloss, high-glass, metallic, holographic, gold leaf, lol, anything you want. You definitely don't want an overlay unless you are trying to add depth or something but you are asking for trouble. Often a transparent overlay will have different expansion/contraction properties and the two layers can fight each other leaving your hood looking like hell. With any vinyl, besides permabond you can just heat it with a hair dryer and pull it off slowly and sometimes painfully depending on the age, but it comes off. I did a corvette hood in flat black (I think it looked like crap), but the guy loved it, two years later he pulled it off, cleaned off all the glue residue with rubbing alcohol, waxed it and it was brand new.
Die-cut stickers, most likely but everyone's definition of die-cut is different. Technically no, I do not have a die cut machine, but I have a razor cut plotter, which can cut 1000 stickers in an hour and they look die-cut. By definition:
"A die-cut sticker is a sticker made from vinyl, usually with cut out spaces made by cutting around a die, or mold."
Unless you are making 100,000 stickers, not many places will custom make a die since computer driven plotters are so damn fast now. I don't know the entire industry, so maybe people do, but I can't imagine why or what advantages using a die would add.
I can make anything look die-cut, but if I tried to make 100,000, my plotter would melt halfway through and I would have to haul it to the dump. If you want to buy that many decals, I would gladly melt a few plotters. The plotter I would like someday might handle it, but the price is $16,400, a bit rich for a hobbiest.

Yeah, the people I use now use 3M Controltac I believe but they did put a matte finish over-laminate on and it hasn't been an issue...
As for Die-cut, I mean that colloquially, just that you have a plotter that can have a path programmed .125" around the entire outside of the design...

Here is a question...I sold my 80 and am acquiring an '87 60 which I plan to rattle can olive drab with krylon ultra flat. Will any of the vinyl you can provide adhere to ultra flat paint? will it adhere to primer?

Just from your response I can tell your shop and you know what they are doing. If you used a match overlay, you have no problems, but many shops just have one overlay material and mix it with whatever underlay they have lying around and it is a crap shoot after the first 20 degree or 100 degree day.

I have had a small sticker on a piece of primed section of my truck for about 6 months now. I actually covered it with body colored vinyl just so it looked good until I get the whole rig painted. So far so good, but I would doubt it will last very long. Primer is too porous. I suppose if your primer was wet sanded, it would work really well, but you might lose that evil look.

I never imagined those stickers could be used to pickup tree-hugger hippie chicks that would normally sneer at these trucks. My 14 mpg is not exactly, "green", haha.
