Thanks for sharing all the details for a 100% NEW engine.
With a short block running close to $4K what is the estimated additional cost for a new top end?
After purchasing all the parts, it has been about $4,500 for the top end, which includes the lifters and the shims. I know others have ported their old ones over. Mine were lost when my old head took a trip to Ohio.

I’ll be down this road this year. Not sure the route I’ll take but plan start a thread for it as well. Been some ups and downs for yours. Enjoy the read though. Your getting closer!
4500 just in the top end? Is that right?!

That is correct. $1,800 bare head, $1k for the cams, $1k for the valves, $700 for the lifters and shims. 😩

Oh Jesus. I’m in for some s*** huh!?
And that doesn't even take into account the time scouring the globe literally trying to track some of these parts down. If you're serious Dave Stedman from @Japan4X4 is going to be your go to resource.

I’m hoping I can do a patch or temporary repair to make it to Cruise Moab. But I feel like it’s going to be down for the remainder of the year after that. If I’m lucky

Dave Stedman not Jason. Dave’s the man.

After looking at Overland Cruiser's "A '96 FZJ80 gets some spa time" thread I decided to purchase a new radiator. I ordered a Denso from Summit Racing. I figured it would be prudent to mate a brand new motor with a new radiator.

Also going to order the Powerbrake X-Line 4x4 Big Brake kit. I want more stopping power. Too many foolish drivers in California. We all know how long it takes to stop our 80s. I always give myself proper distance, but fools like to cut in front in Cali if their cars will fit.

The last piece of the puzzle showed up today. I have been anxiously awaiting the cams as they were the last two in the United States. They are here and now I can get them to the machine shop so this project can be completed!

Just when I thought I was done buying parts I had a conversation with @Deathvalleypaul.:bang: I told him that I bought a new radiator and fan clutch. He told me that I should check the fan for cracks because someone he knew had one explode and destroy the radiator. Went to partsouq and found the part number for the Aisin replacement and ordered it on Amazon. I didn't feel like running down to my mechanic to check. Might as well make it new also. It's only money...

In other parts of the build my new head should be ready to be picked up from the machine shop on Monday. My mechanic has been stressed about having my 80 at the shop so he wants to finish it and have it on its way. I'm in agreement with him on that. Hoping to have it back by the third week of February.

Also planning on taking the 80 to Cruise Moab in late April. I'll be there with Goose Gear along with Brian, the owner, who is bringing his 60. This will be my first time to Moab - so looking forward to it.

I well be at Cruiser Moab for the third time, great event good people good times and lots of Cruisers!!!

Buttoning some parts issues with the engine rebuild. The machine shop called and said there were some parts missing from the cam shafts. When I looked I realized that I had forgotten all the parts that attach to the end of them. I have now ordered them. Of course, one retainer clip is on back order with no eta. I reached out to @Japan4X4 to see if he could get a rush delivery. I want to get the 80 back on the road! Anyway my new fan came today.

Hope to see you there. I don't know if I will be there. The sight crashed and when my friend got back on it sold out. We're working some channels hoping to still get in. :frown:
Yep, I was persistent and kept refreshing the page for almost 40 minutes tell I finally got through.

In the past I have seen lot of people just show up. 🤷‍♂️

Look forward to seeing you there😉
