At the drag strip.
I will be going to Japan for about 2 weeks in May. I was wondering if there are any JDM parts I should be interested in for my 94 cruiser while I'm there. I was thinking of adding a swing out tire carrier. Also if there is anyone on this list who is in Japan, particularly in the Tokyo/Yokohama area, do you know of any good places to go looking for used parts? Thanks in advance.

Let me introduce myself, I've dealed with so much JDM parts in the past.(not just cruiser parts). Here few lists for you to remember:

1. You may want to carry enough money/ cash with you.

2. You said, you want to buy or add swing out tire carrier  those are easy parts why don't you get them here in the U.S? Now if you want JDM parts, you want it something unique, and make sure nobody have it here in the U.S <-only you have it and that's what JDM means.

3. And one thing to remember, at the int'l airport they won't allow you to carry those car parts or such tire carrier onto passenger plane. It just their policy.
You may want to consider cargo plane to ship the parts to U.S->more $$$.

4. Currency Exchange USD-Japan

Good Luck

Oh and by the way one of the MUD members - Mot he's in Japan :flipoff2: :D

Yeah, I will definitely be shipping stuff home, if I get anything. The tire carrier I was interested in was not (as far as I know) offered here in the states.

about the only thing that I have seen worth getting is the grab bar for the front passenger. You can get that fron MOT still I think.

The swing out carrier won't work on our 80s as there is no support in the fender for it.

If you're planning an aux gas tank then maybe the overhead fuel guage would be nice.

There is also a cooler chest of sorts that fits in place of the center console, I don't know how involved it is to install but that might be a nice addition.

But if your whole point is to bring back something unique so you can feel special....well that's kind of sad.

In order to use the factory swing out carrier you will also need the quarter panel, the inner quarter panel, the lower tailgate, the rear license plate bracket and a bunch of hardware. How big is your suitcase?....:D

I guess the tire carrier is out. Sounds like too much work and $. I'm just looking for stuff that isn't available here. Japan offered quite a few options on their cruisers that just aren't available here in the US. Some had some interesting camping packages. The cooler might be part of that. As far as feeling special, I don't really need parts for that. :flipoff2: I'm just going to Japan to meet up with my wife who has been there for about a month and a half now visiting her parents. I just thought that I might find some things to fill my time there as I live with the in-laws.

If you are in need to feel special and want to get some love (because you are not gettin' it from your wife) you can take a trip a little further south and meet yours truly. :hillbilly

I don't want to insult you by saying this, but a lot of times dealerships and parts warehouse(Toyota kyohan) will ask you for the vehicle registration information, sometimes including your chassis #, etc... to make sure you are not getting the wrong parts.

They also do that to so somebody will not be getting these parts to export them.:D I was asked that question a couple of times myself. But other times, they do not bother asking me for the vehicle info., if I have the exact part number, etc...

Aux. fuel tank was not offered in Japan, so the overhead console consisted of the compass (needs external sensor) and the altimeter. The folding mirrors by themselves (w/o the switch/relay, etc...) retails for around $500US. And don't even fantasize(sp) about the cooler/fridge, not to mention the reare ac. ;p ;) The overhead console was standard on almost all models and the fridge/cooler was standard on the VX-Limited model before '95 (optional after that).

I'm sure there are junk yards that have parts rigs, but visiting them would not be easy. So your best option is to find someone online that are willing to work with you (especially with hard-to-extract parts).

Anyway, let me know if you are willing to stay on the shinkansen for 1.5-2.0 hrs (from Tokyo) and we can hash these out over some sushi. :D

HTH's!

Seebee,
We have got to talk. Myself and Cruiser Clint were stationed in Japan (NAVY) for many years and I can tell you some places to go.

Give a call and we can make this happen.

The only market those appear to have been in were the OZ Market! Would that be ODM? :D

All the Aussies get the cool stuff!
