I saw some guys in the 80's forum that had installed Gentex mirrors, but didn't see any threads here on the 60's forum, so I thought I'd share my experience. If this has already been kicked around, I apologize. I'm still a newbie. A couple of months ago, I started looking for something that would display the outside air temp inside the cabin. My search eventually led me to Gentex auto dimming mirrors. They make several varieties. I settled on the one that displays the outside temperature as well as compass heading.

See all their mirrors at this web site:

I purchased it from here, they have free shipping:

Gentex Auto Rear View Mirror With Compass and Temperature

The windshield mount piece and the cement to glue it on the windshield came with the mirror from Autoanything.

The installation in my fj62 wasn't bad at all. I installed the probe first. I placed it pointing down in the big hole on the drivers side in the front crossmember right behind the front bumper, and routed the wires along the drivers side over the wheel well and through an unused hole in a rubber plug on the drivers side firewall where the hood release cable comes out. The plastic conduit wasn't quite long enough, so I'll have to get about a 2 foot long piece to make it all the way to the firewall. Cruisers have a long nose. After routing the probe wires up onto the top of the dash, I removed the original mirror and glued the mirror mount on the windshield per the instructions. I was careful to mount it low enough so the visors can go up and down without hitting the mirror. I mounted the mirror on the windshield and plugged the connector into the mirror. I routed the temp probe wires along the top of the windshield over the drivers side. Just pulled the rubber down and stuffed the wire in working my way from the center left and down around the side. Then I routed the power wires using the same method, only to the right. I coiled up the extra temp probe wire and tie wrapped it up under the dash. Then on the right side, I connected the ground to a bolt under the dash, and found a switched 12V lead under the kick panel on the right. Voila, it works great. :)

Glad to see it works. I've been planning to do this exact same thing with my 62 this summer. Bummer that it can't bolt up right in place of the factory mirror though. I'd rather have to modify my visors for a wider mirror than have it glued to my windshield.

How do you like the auto dimming function?

I like the idea of this... I tried one of those small LCD units on a suction cup at bottom of window and it didn't work (pathfinder or something). It wasn't a 9.99 cheap-o, but i think there was too much metal for it to work right. The temp outside is one of those things i like on newer cars and miss on the FJ60.

Pics?

thx for posting this - may be added to my wish list.

I'll try to do some pics later, but there really isn't much to see, it's all hidden except the mirror and the temp probe. I haven't had it on the road yet since I installed it, so I haven't tested the auto dim feature. I'm prepping for a new coat of paint. But the mirror in my Ford Fusion is the same one without the temp and compass and the auto dim works great. You almost forget it is there.

Here is the temp probe behind the bumper.

Bringing this thread back...

I am in the process of getting one of these ready to go into my 60. My question is: how fast does the temperature reading react to changes in temp? In my unscientific testing it appears that changes down show up very quickly while increases in temp register more slowly. Not a deal breaker in either case but I am just curious if others are seeing similar results... Maybe that is a "feature" as temp drops to the freezing point can be a safety issue while driving but increases in temp don't have any direct safety aspects.

I'm also looking to install a new mirror. Mine sits too high to get a good view outI of the back window. I also did away with the headliner for now, so wiring will be easy.
I think I'm gonna use the version with the backup camera, to assist with trailer hookup. These are great mods and can be had relatively cheap.

Could one get an arm and mount in the stock location? I would hate to glue something to my windshield and then have an un-used mounting spot.

I doubt it. You could always cover up the holes in the headliner with an extra overhead light, or homelink panel though.

Nice little mod, would love to have the stock rearview a little lower so that I can see out the rear a bit better. This would kill two birds with one stone. Hhhhmmmmm...................

The gentex are oem and available dirt cheap at the pick n pull, or for around $75-200 on eBay, depending on the features.

Why do you say that?
