gas mileage for a 60/62??

I may buy an 83 or 84 FJ60. Any suggestions what I can do to get better mileage for a very long trip and still pass smog tests? I'm also in NY and you may have a better idea of what's required here. Thanks

Follow the advice here- tune up, valve adjustment, stock size tires, no extra cargo, shift early, find a tailwind, etc.

For passing smog, all the smog stuff needs to be up to snuff.

Buy the factory emissions manual and follow it front to back. Be ready to spend some $$$$$ and time.

BTW, my new to me 87 FJ60 is getting about 10 mpg in town and about 14-14.5 on the highway (I tried to saty between 60-65 mph and 2600-2800 rpm's). I am getting ready to do the full tune-up and see how much and if it helps.

Hi,
What's a usa dizz and aisin carb? i'm trying to find ways to improve the gas mileage of an '83 or '84 Fj60 — one of which I may buy for a 2500 mile trip. Thanks

dont waste your money trying to improve mileage!!

IMHO you cant make a mule into a race horse, and you cant make a tractor engine into a fuel efficient machine. Just my 2 cents.;) But a mule will with reliability travel 2500 miles every time. Although not sure Id want to travel 2500 highway miles in it. Its more built for backroads!!

I had my FJ60 engine rebuilt about 2 1/2 months ago. Had my carb rebuilt by Jim C and installed a new H55 tranny . I'm sad to say that the most I've gotten is around 12 to 13 mi per gallon going an average 60 to 65 mph on freeways when there's no traffic that is :-(. Running on 16 x 8 wheels with P2857516 BFG RAD KO TA A/T 8 ply.

I was hoping I'd get at least 15 per gallon. My tank holding 22 gallons.

Hopefully, one of these days someone will figure out a way to get a few more miles to the gallon.

BTW its my daily driver for now. Round trip to my office and home is approximately 46 miles. Doesn't include surf sessions 3 days a week which is an extra 20 miles round trip.

1984 FJ60 33x12.50x15 and 4.56 gears in excellent tune.

In the 12+ years I've owned this truck I average about
12 city 16 highway

I have gotten less but rarely much more.

(I used to have a 1969 FJ40 and it didn't get much better mileage if any, but it was a whole lot easier to work on with it's ONE vacuum line though.)

I get 9.5

Hi guys,

mine can gave me 9.5 in town, (I drive it like my gand pa 30/35 mph)

Am thinkig seriosly to convert it to a diesel V8 chevy eng & transm.

Regards.

My motor is rebuilt top to bottom in my 83 FJ60 just before my trip to Alaska. With 33" tires, roof rack filled, heavy bumper/cans/jacks/tire, seats removed, cabinets built into the truck and all full I was still getting 11 on flat ground and 13 where there was a slight down grade and doing 65mph. Once I actually looked at my gps and saw I was 85 downhill at one point - which I didn't think could actually happen.

I get "good" mileage - for a 60

I average 11-12 around town and about 15-16 highway.

my motor hasn't been re-built or anything and has about 150k on the clock. I've owned the motor since it lived in my first FJ60. I personally changed the oil every 3k miles. no carb rebuild, nuthin.

I've got bumpers, winch, sliders and goodies like that - 4.11s and 33's and H55f...AND I drive it like a little old lady. going easy on the skinny pedal is the easiest way to improve mileage.

Yulp, I have a fairly built 60 and get 15mpg if I drive right.

The 2f has so much lowend I am shifting at about 2k...

I took my brother v8 for a spin and tryed shifting it like a 2f...the thing was a dog(lugging it). But really took off at higher RPMs...

I prefer the 2f.

Pleasant surprise

I just made a trip to Aspen and back (from Denver) and was very pleased to see 15.3 mpg (corrected for tire size). Pretty good considering Loveland Pass, Fremont Pass, and of course... Independence Pass. I ran about 65mph indicated wherever possible.

setup: 202K on the bottom end, head reworked at 150k, carb'd by Jim C at the same time. 33/10.5 MT's, 3" lift, 4 speed, stock ratio, Yakima bars.

Now, if I could just break the 50mph barrier up to the Eisenhower .

Maybe after the H55f, 4.11's and TBI? Though a Gen III vortec swap from Randy in Dallas is the goal.

I have a brush guard, winch, ARB roof rack, tough boxes mounted on roof rack (giant air catchers), fuel cans, 32 inch tires, on my 87 FJ60. I get a consistant 12-13 miles per gallon no matter what I do. Highway or in town. Not to mention I cruise about 65-70 mph everywhere I go, and I don't baby it when I take off. I do have a Davidson unified ignition, headers, electric fuel pump. I think I am doing good with the mileage though. I also have a weber 38 mm dgas carb.

13 to 15 mixed town and hiway. best was 18 all hiway but not much freeway, some Mt.. Currently needs carb tune. and to advance timing a bit. As mileage was better before I set it to spec. can drive 80 on the flat. but don't. It will accelerate uphill but not well. Sweet spot is about is about 55 mph with 31" BFG. All stock not de-smogged yet. Road trips are usually in my wifes 90 subaru. 28 MPG.
My old Suburban got 8 to 10 regardless. Even towing. It had a 305. I don't think I want to afford a diesel. Altho I do letch.

15?!
-I'm getting killed! I did a head refresh and a desmog with headers and a JimC dizzy. If the gas gauge is correct(mine lingers around half way it seems?) I'm only getting around 7!. I'm running at 17 inches of mercury off the intake and all pistons are at 160psi compression. 32" tires, stock drive train and suspension, no brushgaurds
-What did I do wrong?

I have a 83, 60 with 252k on the clock. It runs okay and I think it needs a carb rebuild. It has problems like idling at 1000 to 1300 rpms, and it also likes to run funny around 2000 rpms. It does not miss and I put new plugs and wires. Working on all the rest. It is somewhat desmoged, will finish it up as soon as I have enough money. I am running I think stock size tires. They look like little donuts. It loves to do 50 to 60 mph but can go up to 80 to 85 mph. I have been getting around town about 11.49 mpg so far. No roof rack, bumpers, or lift yet. I will post later about somewhat of a little highway mileage. Jason
