gas mileage for a 60/62??

To answer the V8 question, my sor 40 with a 351 and holley projection gets about 10 to 12 on the highway with a 27% over drive, 35's, and 4.11's. As much as I like the V8 for grunt and performance, and reliabilty, I hate the gas milage and will be doing a diesel conversion.

this last weekend my 60 and an 80 drove to ohio meeting, end of trip 290 miles, 20 gallons of gas about 14.5 mpg. stock gearing, 31 inch tires, around 3000 rpm's. I thought that was not bad.

60 gas mileage

I have an 83 FJ60. 302K miles. It never goes above 65 mph, revs never above 3000. In town I get about 14 mpg, on the highway 17.5-18 mpg. Stock size tires on, and I know that the odometer/speedo is on, been by the radar traps and through the measured miles. Check the air pressure once a week and don't drive it like a damn race car. It's not. It's not an acceleration demon. Have a friend that has an 86 FJ60. I swear he bumps redline on every shift, foot always on the floor. Gets maybe 12 mpg on the highway, less in town. It's all in how you drive it. I'm POSITIVE that all those guys that get 10, 11, 12 mpg drive like they're driving a formula one car.

I know some of you guys must have the orignal literature. When these things were new, what did Toyota claim the MPG to be (60s and 62s)? I'm just curious to see how the mileage changes over time/wear.... it must be on some brochure or something.

The specs say that the 60 series Land Cruisers get 11mpg in town and 18 mpg on the highway.

As montanabob1 said, the mileage is entirely dependent on how you drive it. My uncle's M5 was rated at 18 mpg highway, but he got 22 mpg driving up the mountain to my camp.

Hooray for grandma drivers!

or maybe just not like a little old lady?! hehehe.

and for the record i get 10-12 in town and 15ish freeway. w/ 31's...not bad for a beat up old LC. needs a tune up.

nah i shift at 2200 rpms just about every time. I'm turning bigger meats and have re-geared it back to stock. I think its the exrta weight and wind resistance from tires and protection and SOA lift...IMO

17 - 18 mpg at 65 - 70 mph with 32" tires, but I dint have to deal with smog stuff and have made a few modifications to get milage like that.

I averaged 11.5 over 2759 miles with 33s and an uncalibrated speedo and I never went over 60mph, or well what I thought was 60mph.

Consistant Anyway..

My 84 fj60 has had every tank of gas recorded since it was new. I'm the second owner. average for the life of the truck with stock wheels and near stock tires. 11.75mpg. I got 16mpg bringing the rig up from the Ontario A/P in southern CA when I went to pick it up ( I live in central Oregon). That was the only trip I've made on the road with out either lots of Mt. driving or at least mild wheeling to lower the gas milage. I put less than 5K miles per year on it now so an't no big deal. If I run my 33's here in Bend where it is fairly hilly..I average about 10 at at best.

lift = lower mileage.

You want it to get the best mileage?

keep the small tires and drive 55..

low and slow is the key.

When I have numbers on my rig. (35's 3.70's and super short) I'll post them

This past weekend I had a chance to chat for awhile with Jim Chenowith, and I asked the same from him. His answer was:

A properly maintained 60 should be in the 16 mpg.

He also talked to a larger group and Aussie mirrors, auto transmissions, lifts and improper gear to tire size ratios will affect mpg. Not in a good way.

Just got back from a 2200mi. road trip a couple weeks ago. Went from Ohio to YankeeToys fall gathering up in New Hamshter, then over to the coast of Maine for a few days, down to Monticello, NY to crew a ProRally the next weekend, then all the way across Pennsylvania from the NE corner to the SW corner.

On the outbound leg(OH-NH-ME) we went 1017mi(true) and burned 59.33gals of cheapsh1t unleaded.
Avg fuel economy was 17.14MPG. :)

Then there was the miles from Maine to the Rally and use of the truck by the rally team. We lost track of miles and fuel consumption during that part.

On the return leg (NY-PA-OH) we went 595miles and burned 39.2gals for an avg. of 15.18MPG. :crybaby:

Outbound was across northern OH, PA and NY on I-90 at 64MPH, w/ a stock front bumper and no roof rack.

Return leg was w/ an ARB front bullbar & a roof rack loaded w/ 33" tires (thanks Annie!), fighting a headwind through the mountains of PA. Sometimes going a little faster than 64MPH 'cause we were ready to be home by then. 11 days in a stock FJ60 front seat makes a person want to get home.

Next FJ60 will get better fuel economy due to a better cylinder head (more port work) and a Fairey OD and a chrome header.

Just dropped off my FJ60 to finally get painted and the rust repaired in SoCal.... averaged 13.1mpg going 65-70mph all highway. stock gears, 4speed manual, 33x12.5"s, stock bumpers, no roof rack.

I'd like to get 15mpg... it hasn't had a tune up in 20K miles... probably time.

I average 15mpg highway (not coming close to the posted 70mph) and something sick in town, about or less 10 (lots of stops signs in carson city). The previous owner told me 20mpg and I cursed him the first month I filled up. Coming back from the bay area last time I filled up at about 200 miles, 10 gallons. Totally psyched I told my wife at the pump next to me who reminded me I actually got over 230 miles on an accurate speedo. Gotta love flat horizons...The trip over 88 gobbled up that and I averaged around 14.

1988 FJ62
SOA with 35's
4.88's, 3F (Carb, no smog), 5 speed

All tests were done with GPS (mileage & speed) :

Daily drive to work: 15.5 mpg

Weekend towing 2000 lb offroad trailer, highway cruise at 65 mpg, one day trail was mountainous : Averaged 13.5 mpg

250 mile highway test run, slightly hilly, no mountains, averaged 73 mph, pushing at times to 86 mph to overtake: 14.85 mpg

Steady highway run at 65 mph :

Serious offroad with thick sand and a heavy foot: 11.3 mpg

10-10.5 regardless:(

I have installed a K&N filter, had a complete tune up and it's all stock with no racks, stock bumpers, etc.

About the 3rd tank after the tuneup and K&N, drove like a little ole lady, all the "right" stuff = 10.5

2 tanks later, drove it like I stole it...= 10.5

Every check since then has been in the same range...hey, at least it's consistant...:D

What are you driving?

I just took my mileage over my trip to Connecticut this weekend. I had 20 miles of regular city driving on my tank when I started my 140 mile trip. After that 160 miles, I put on another couple miles and filled my tank.

I was suprised when I got 15.5 miles to the gallon. Very plesantly suprised indeed!

I have a freshly rebuilt carb (myself) as well as new fuel, air and oil filters and next-to new NGK plugs.
