OH, I forgot to mention that it was supposedly rebuilt by the previous owner. It may only have about 3k and 8k on the rebuild...

Reality is the FJ60 & BJ62s are gutless gas pigs, get a diesel my HJ61 gets 20+ with 35's as soon as my kid passes his drivers test im parting with my 62 can't afford her anymore, she's got 290,000kms and has been reliable since new,but I have a driveway full of diesel powered cruisers and won't go gas anymore.

15?!
-I'm getting killed! I did a head refresh and a desmog with headers and a JimC dizzy. If the gas gauge is correct(mine lingers around half way it seems?) I'm only getting around 7!. I'm running at 17 inches of mercury off the intake and all pistons are at 160psi compression. 32" tires, stock drive train and suspension, no brushgaurds
-What did I do wrong?

I forgot to mention I can't even get above 70, because the fuel pump maxes out. wtf.

Sounds like something else is wrong with your truck. Have you played with the idle mixture at all? Maybe it's too rich...

I have not played with the mixture, I thought that only changed the ratio of air/gas at idle?
-It does seem to be rich; backfires occasionally(I'm positive fuel ics is fine)

This is true, but if you do a lot of city driving it could make a difference.

How about this, how do you drive your truck? I drive mine like an old man to try to get better mileage. I also have 33" meats.

11 or so in mixed driving... city and highway.

Just got almost 16 2 weeks ago doing straight highway. 33s on an otherwise stock 1986 fj60

I don't check my mileage... I don't want to know and now the gas price went down, from 90 cents a liter to 47 :bounce::bounce2:, I'm not complaining.

I got 17 mpg freeway going 50 to 55 mph with stock 4.11 gearing and 31" tires. I get 9 mpg for everything other than slow cruising on freeway.

running on stock tires w/ recent tune-up, 91 octane --
scenario 1 on the fwy: loaded w/ some gear in back, :princess: & 3 kids...15-17mpg at 60-65mph, at around 2200rpm, n gettin almost 270 miles on a full tank!
scenario 2 on the surface st: by meself w/ no passengers or gear, like everyone else, about 9mpg

That is just not fair.....I would love 14 to 15 mpg... man that would be nice

Headers, desmog and a carb rebuild is all you need my friend. :grinpimp:

Does it have to be headers, Or would just finish desmoging it and a Carb rebuild help in that department?

TLCAddict,
How are you getting 2200 RPMS at 65 mph with stock tires? I have to do about 55 mph to get down to 2200 RPMS and I have 31" tires and 4.11 gearing...

A desmog and carb rebuild will yield significant improvements in performance as well as fuel economy with or without headers. Headers, for me anyway, give me the sound I was looking for.

I found a set of used headers from proffits cruisers That I am currently winning on ebay.. Hopefully I get them low enough to afford them.

OOPS my big mouth..

My 88 is completely stock, except for the OME and 32s. Just loves to run about 65 to 70. And gets 250 on a tank regardless of what you are doing. I guess about 11 mpg all around. Doesn't seem to change if you're towing a boat or loaded trailer. Always about the same. A great truck.

I had JEEPS before. Both the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. All of them had the straight six and seemed to get about 17-18 regardless. But I can tow more and carry more in the cruiser and its just a lot more fun to drive.
