The appear to be the same diameter. 2.5” outside.
The housings are pretty much the same. Metalcloak even makes retrofits for Johnny joint housings. These just use a clevite style bushing that rotates in the housing

Do you plan to run hydro assist?

My masters program is back in full swing so it’s taking up a good bit of my time and progress is a little slow. Buuuut today I got the front end aligned, the sway bar adjusted correctly, the ram mounted again, and the stop nuts adjusting for the steering. Oh and I rebuilt the front drive shaft again. I don’t think the tolerances are all that great on the spicer u joints, the u joint cup things were spinning in the yoke on one end… I’m hoping that’s where the growling on decel was from. The GMBs from rock auto are cheap and I’ve always had good luck with them so they’re going back in

Do you run a standard Toyota front shaft or a DC?

The stock boy. It didn’t growl at me until I put the spicers in
I asked bc I wondered why you don’t run the Japanese made Matsuba joints.

After two years or something I finally have limit straps in! Hopefully this stops the giant clunk when the shocks hit full droop through whoops and keeps the coilovers alive longer. I also welded in a gusset for the sway bar mount on the axle because I bent them a couple times and was too lazy to fix it. Now that the little stuff I’ve been putting off for a while is done, time to do the underdrive gears

Finally dug into the transfercase! The previous owner put low range gears in which is nice. Buuuut 37s and 4.88s kinda sucks so I’m putting the 10% underdrive in that I’ve had sitting on the shelf for a year and a half. I didn’t remove it from the car which…. Now I feel is kinda silly. The input shaft was a breeze with a 3 jaw puller. I had to make a press tool to get the gears off the output shaft which took a bit. I’m really hoping this is worth the time and effort

You will like the low gears
They do make a difference!

I can’t image doing the gears with the case in the truck. My 12T press couldn’t force the input gear off the shaft so I took it into Portland to Land Cruisers Northwest and their hydraulic press got it off. You do stuff the hard way!

Agreed. Also, making sure that the metal from trimming that metal lip is all cleaned out would bother me. I love the idea of swapping the gears but both ways are a ton of work, pulling the transfer vs. installing while still in the rig.

I don’t think I’d do this project with the case in the truck again😂 Once I got my little shim to the right height pulling the gears off with the 3 jaw puller was super easy. Maybe it’s different with the low range gears though!

The last owner did all that when he did the low range gears! Or do I have to trim something else for the high range gears?

Originally I didn't really have the cash to buy the low range gears, so I only did 10%UD on the high gear and part time conversion. But I wish I had just done both while I was in there. Since to do the low range in the future it would all have to come out anyway.

I'm interested to hear how much of a difference you feel. I also don't run 37s though. Currently on 35s and going down to 34s most likely.
