Fuel Filter Replacement? Yes? No?

How hard is it to replace? My TLC is in for 90K service and the Toyota dealer wants to replace the fuel filter as well, but quoting me over $200 because "it is hard to get to"?!?!

There is also a filter sock in the tank, maybe that's what he said was hard to get to..

The repair pricing manuals repair shops use quote one hour labor to replace the filter under the hood. I was quoted $190 to replace, using an aftermarket filter. Needless to say, I told them no.

It's easy, very easy. It's under the hood on the drivers side attached to the top of the wheel well, it's not hard to get to at all. It looks like a miniature black beer can and has a hard line going in from the rear and a soft line coming out of the front. You'll need a few small hand tools to accomplish the job and it'll take maybe 20 minutes once you get started.
Just look at it and you'll see the few tools you'll need.

It was the regular fuel filter, $60 for the part and $150 for the job - they were obviously trying to rip me off.

Good grief.....!

That is twice the price of the filter (anywhere else) and it takes all of 10 minutes (if you're slow) to replace it.

Those are pretty steep shop rates.

changed mine yesterday to an OEM filter. Easy job. I'd recommend starting the flare fitting on the fuel line a few turns first and then mounting the filter with the 2 12mm bolts. then tighten the fuel line.

Hey fellas. For those that have changed the fuel filter did you swap out any other parts?

I talked to my cousin, master tech at Toyota, and he recommended to swap the plastic clip on the opposite end of the 14mm nut.

He also suggested swapping out the white plastic clip holding the line.

Only $5+ or so for the small plastic parts above.

Did any of you experience leaking after the swap do to not changing out the plastic clips?

Can you post the part numbers for those plastic parts? I like having stuff like that on hand in case I break a piece mid change. Thanks.

I did not change them. the white one is easy to remove and fairly beefy. It does not have to be taken out of the metal from to do the filter change. However the green one is kind of delicate and I thought of changing it but did not. No leaks. If and when I do this again I will order the green clip ahead of time.

All I can say is, "Heck YEAH... REPLACE IT!!!!!"

I replaced my filter yesterday and after fiddling with the green clip, I was wishing I had a spare in case I broke it. I took my time and carefully dealt with it and got lucky and nothing broke. The white clip was a bit of a bear to get off, at least for me. Just thick plastic and again, I was trying to be gentle so I wouldn't break it.

I completed the task in less than 30 min.

And here is the result.... Not for the weak stomach.
(I don't think it has ever been replaced in 260K miles.)

Filter is ordered and on the way, looking forward to swapping it out. I got my unit 14 months old, you never know what type of gas the previous owner put in it.

I will be ordering both plastic clips today from Toyota. They will arrive tomorrow morning.
I will post part numbers and pics.
