My 2003 Land Cruiser had trouble accelerating after refueling. It was sputtering and I pulled over and it would not idle. I had it towed to my Toyota mechanic. It is currently being diagnosed, but it may need a new fuel pump. About how much should that cost in TN (Memphis area)? Thanks!

OEM pump is like $500, Denso is around $130. Probably 2 hours of labor when it really takes 30 minutes.
Are the Denso units still available anywhere? I was under the impression their fuel pump production was bought out by Aisan (Not Aisin) and that all the places that still listed Denso units for sale were out-of-stock or un-updated search hits.

The Aisan prices are all over the map but seem to be as low as $190 but as expensive as $300-$400

I'm running a Delphi from RockAuto and so far, so good with a couple thousand miles on it.

It's an easy job once you get to it, but the second row driver-side seat needs to come out, that section of carpet needs to fold forward and an inspection cover needs to be removed.

I also used the Delphi pump with no issues. I’d guess 5k miles ago.

Just a datapoint, but I recently replaced the tank in our 2006. I got a used tank from a salvage yard that came with the fuel pump in addition to the tank. I just made sure the bolts were tightened on that unit and installed it with the tank. It has been running great. As far as the job, you should just need a 14 mm socket to remove the second row seats, a 10mm to remove the plastic steps near the doors, a phillips head to remove the cover, a small flat head to remove the yellow clips that hold the fuel lines in, and I believe a 9 mm to remove the 10 or so bolts that secure the fuel pump in the tank. You might want to disconnect the electrical connector to the pump and start the truck to help relieve the pressure in the lines, but they pop out. They might spew some fuel, but it won’t be more than a quarter cup (few paper towels should be good). If this doesn’t sound good to you then I can imagine the job would take around an hour given the seats and connections.

I was gonna mention the de-pressurizing the fuel line as well but it sounded like he was having it done as opposed to doing it.

OEM is like $275 from Partsouq. Around 7-10 days delayed getting it all the way from the Middle East I'd guess, but IDK...it's just another data point.

Yes, I'm having it done....don't have the know how to tackle this! I appreciate your response!

Thanks for all the responses. I just had the master cylinder done and that was expensive! I'm hoping that it isn't too serious!

@Sowbug2000 - you may find that you want to learn the skills to fix your own truck. We all started somewhere (lawnmowers, go-karts, etc.). There are so many good videos on YouTube that you can at least get a good appreciation of what the mechanic is going to do, and charge you for.
