ya know....all these silly pics, and not one photo of the wheel bearings.....just my luck....course, my hand were full of grease from the repack process.....

oh well, next year...lol

Even without all the text, this is a great post! Thanks!

well no dust covers? lol
no pre load settings? lol

just given some crap.

lots o red dirt

Blue dials?

what brand socket? i need one that will last. I hate everyone
i have seen so i do not use them.

I second the tech link vote! Mine look like they have giant dirt clods covering them ( acting as seals right now!) I need to rebuld this summer, this will help tons.

Thanks

Gotta like those cookie sheets, have two in the shop I put under the knuckles when I do a service.

Never seen spindle nuts like the units you used, good idea.

The last photo of post 4 and the first couple photos of post 5 show the adjusting nuts that retain/torque the wheel bearings. Pull those two nuts, remove the spindle, remove the inner wheel seal, and you can remove both inner and outer wheel bearings to repack....they are completely separate of the grease in the knuckle.

VERY NICE BRIAN!!!

Why do you have to pull the spindle to repack wheelbearings though?

The red would clash with the blue too much... ;)

Will there be a link added in the FAQ for this?

This is great reference material Brian! I am sure that it will help many, many people in the future!

THANK YOU!!!

Read closer Steve. :flipoff2:

He was also replacing the spindle bolts with the ARP stud kit.

I am well aware of that youngin....

Did you notice the post by REZARF?

" How do you get the wheel bearings out? I know it is a simple question, but I was in there the other day and didnt see any obvious way to yank them out. Do you pull out the short shaft and they come with it? "

Have a great day.

My bad. I'll quietly back out and shut up now.

Have a great day.

For some reason I think these little notes at the end of your posts are tainted with some sarcasm... :flipoff2:

someday you will know learn what this REALLY means :)

;)

Pulled a spare knuckle, spindle, hub, lockout off the shelf...the hub does NOT have the brake rotor attached....pics show the assembly (minus a few bolts...lol)...

DSCN2272.JPG

...the lockout removed and the outer nut that would have the outer bearing behind it (if it were actually there...lol)...

DSCN2273.JPG

...the hub removed from the knuckle/spindle....

DSCN2274.JPG

...removal of the inner wheel bearing seal....

DSCN2275.JPG

...the seal removed....mostly...

DSCN2276.JPG

...and a very goopy inner wheel bearing...the outer looks similar but is smaller diameter. BOTH bearings have a race that's in the hub itself, and once you get one cleaned up and all that goo removed, you'd see those two notches inside the hub body, they are there for a long punch to tap/remove the races...

DSCN2277.JPG

Normally, on removal, there would be a backing plate for the rotor, a rotor, another wiper, etc all installed as part of the spindle. When the hub/rotor come off, these stay.

outta clear up the last couple oddities in all this.....

hey woody do you remeber if the brake line you used to bypass the backing plate was the long one or short one . i am rebuilding my front right now and noticed it in one of the pics no backing plate . i would like to get rid of my backing plates also . my truck also has spring over . i would attach mine just like yours . so the saddle ,below spring . thanks

Thanks Woody-

Everything I needed to know about this weekends project I now have sitting right in front of me in pics!

Now if you could only read my mind concerning my power steering conversion for this summer I would be rocking!

Rezarf <><

Nice!

Nice Woodro! :grinpimp:

BTW - Are those OSHA approved steeltoe maccasins you're sporting? :flipoff2:
