I decided I needed a fridge for the new company's explorations. I did a bunch of research and settled on this: FP430 Compact EdgeStar Portable Refrigerator Freezer

Inexpensive (compared to other models), very good reviews, also purchased a 5 year extended warranty. Shipping was free! I also found 3, yes 3! coupon codes to bring the price down even further!

Cold beer now for everyone on my trips!!!

what was the final price? where did you find the coupon codes? share share share,, I read all the reviews and it looks pretty good especially for half the price of the engel 45 qt

keep us posted!

Thanks.

I love my ARB it was such a rewarding accessory to have on our trip out west this summer....... it makes extended camping trips so much more civilized :grinpimp:

enjoy your new toy!!

I used the code 'Extra' plus two others I found by googling 'compact appliance coupon codes.' The other two codes I used expired - do a quick search online and see what the new ones are. You also get no sales tax to GA, but have to pay it to SC. A new fridge shipped to GA without an extended warranty is $399 before any discounts. Add sales tax to SC, and a 5 year warranty is $89 with shorter lengths less.

Fridge is here - it had bombproof packaging. It cooled from 53 deg F to 34 deg F in no time. I hope to mount it in my FJC later this week. I'll post some pics up soon.

Seems like a super smokin' deal. It'll be interesting to know how it holds up against the you-get-what-you-pay-for argument. From the link you provided and looking up user reviews it seems like a logical choice against the much higher cost engle and arb. I'm assuming you'll use it for work as well?

Hijack: How's all that going btw? For you and the wife?

I think it was a good deal. I read a ton of reviews and the only problems have been with the hinges (seemed to be fixed) loose top clamp (mine looks OK) and some were shipped with a loose connection inside (seems to be fixed). Reports are that warranty issues have been handled with ease so since these fridges don't have a track record to speak of since they are so new I purchased a 5 year warranty. I usually don't purchase warranty's but for < $500 to my door if I get 5 years of use out of it I'll be happy.

Yup - will be using this a good bit for the consulting company, but also for the new company that I haven't announced yet...

what kind of compressor does it use?

Not sure. ExPo has a good thread on these @ Cheap Fridge <$400 shipped - Expedition Portal Forum. There might be some info on there.

I'll try to get some tonight. I've been in meetings all day and trying to play catch up now. Have to finish another presentation also for a guest lecture at a University tomorrow...no rest for the weary... :frown:

yeah, 11 pages in... (outta 38) and no one knows what kind of compressor? Isn't someone curious as to who manufactures the "magic" inside? Looks like a good deal though.

From my experience with the WAECO I recommend an insulated cover for it. Don't know if Edgestar has one, but at the very least keep a blanket over it during summer and you'll save your battery.

I'm interested in this whole fridge/freezer deal. For most of us why would we need one? Not like most of us ever spend more than a couple days camping in our cruisers. It takes up a lot of potential sleeping space and a couple bags of ice and a good cooler would work just as well. What am I missing here?

Oh and I could probably pick up a few similar to the one above from over sea for probably under 200 each. Anyone want to be guinea pig?

I do a good bit of camping - probably 8 over night trips a year, plus a good bit of field work. Having a fridge/freezer is going to make things much easier on me. I have a two week trip coming up this summer and trying to track down ice when I'm in BFE isn't high on my list of fun things to do. Plus, soggy bread, wilted/mushy salad (I know most of you don't touch the green stuff) plus ALWAYS cold beer will make the :princess: much happier on our trips.

I also don't sleep in the back of my FJ and the Pig will have enough room for the fridge plus the :princess: and I.

We also don't need SOA lifts, 35" mud tires, Big Gay 2Fs and extra lighting for most of the places we go - but we still have them.

If I would have known you could have imported these fridges I would have been your guinea pig. :frown:

1. ya never have to worry about water for melted ice getting into your food again.
2. nice if you want to run to costco / beer store durning lunch, you don't have to worry about ice to keep things cold.
3. the most important is........all the cool people have fridge/freezers.

All good answers.

Marshall - i'd be interested in being a guinea pig within the second half of this year. Just let me know if this is something you pursue.

I agree with your thoughts; specifically that most of us don't camp more than 3 nights in a row max. I would have personally never bought one if it wasn't for the month and halft trip I took out west this summer. That said though after having one I would never go back, it makes camping life so much nicer with the elimination of ice..... also will the fridge does take up a lot of potential space but most are smaller than you avg. large cooler and they offer vastly superior holding capacity once again do to the elimanation of the need for ice. Which so commonly hogs up all the space inside your traditional cooler... oh yeah don't forget no more soggy sandwiches or meals :D

all that said John's point is the most accurate; all the cool kids have one. so quit being jealous and man up and get one

I will say that if you are ever on the road for a week or two like we did a couple years ago...they are a blessing. Store your frozen pot pies or veggies around the outer edges and keep the not-so-frozen stuff packed in the middle of the compartment. And as mentioned before, no soggy sandwiches or waterlogged sandwich meat under 4 inches of ice water.

I keep mine in my truck 24/7/365. It is very convenient for trips to the grocery store when I don't want to rush home (sometimes I do my grocery shopping on my lunch break). Also I can pick up a 12-pk on the way to a friend's house and keep the beer frosty en route.

I always have something in mine - usually my lunch fixin's like mayo, mustard, cheese, and ham. Also things like a big jug of Arizona tea, instead of buying 16 oz cans.

Ever go out for dinner and a movie? Put your doggy bag in the truck while you are watching the movie.

I'll admit it is more money than most would consider spending for an appliance, but I find the value to be worth it.

One other thing.....comes in handy when the power goes out. Keep us posted on the oversea venture. for that price a second may be needed.

I'm uncool.

I haven't grown the balls to do the dual battery install yet either. "They" say it's easy though.
