Found a LHD 70 series truck (with pics). Need some advise. (1 Viewer)

Okay guys. It appears I have started a bit of an argument, and that was not my intent. I guess the only way for me to know to sure is to do it (as wayne suggests).

I am going to think about what I am going to do.
I don't want to rush into something.
The idea is to save money. :)

Cheers,
N.

here is an idea Nick.
do a spread sheet using the PZJ as a guideline, ignor ethe items that you think you can get away from and add the ones you feel is relative to your ideal truck...

BTW, full shop rate in Calgary is $100/hr now...

when you go look at the truck again write down EVERYTHING you feel will need even the least amount of work (cause in the end it never is that little).

i have been doing refurbishings for longer than i care to remember and one thing i learned is (as Louis said) the little things will kill you...

nick,

don't do it.

mine trucks can eat your lunch and when you are done they have little interest.

Even having the parts sitting on the shelf, you cannot make the numbers work.

with any LC, unless only 3 know versions exist (like a 1957 FJ25 or a 1959 FJ28), you must start with the most solid and complete base to build from. I took on 23 FJ45 wagons and parted more than 1/2 of them out when the realization hit me.

I've parted 2 mine trucks and laid hands on another 3-4 of them.

trust us, do not do it.

ask the 40 series crew was it worth the $20K investment to realize 1/2 that.

I just sold my clean 1981 40 and got under $12K, which is less than the parts & purchase ($7,500) total ...and I got sub TLCA discount on all the parts.

That is some great advise wayne. Thank you.
I really like the idea of writing everything single little thing down. Then pricing it.
You have been doing resto's (probably longer than I have been alive), so I value your input. I will have to remember that.

I would like a 70 series truck (similar to entrans), but not forever.
Even doing the work myself I could see it costing more than I want to spend.
Any why put that sort of time and passion into something that am not crazy about.
I would much rather put this sort of love into a troopie. :)

So, there you go, fair game.
I will still go back and get a asking price and number.
Then I can pass it on to you guys.

Cheers,
N.

my advice is...if you can get it cheap enough do what is nessecary to make it registerable and just drive the thing...when you are tired of it then part it out and get your money back...

Find out if the engine is a 2H or a 1HZ, i've never seen a 70 series trayback with a 3B.

Although it may very well be a 3B!

I am 99% sure its a 3B.
The guy that used to work on the mine trucks has a diesel injectiopn shop here in town. I brought in a 3B, and it brought a smile to his face. We talked about the old mine trucks for a bit.

Also mentioned the mines here had izuzs and the all died with in a month, So they went back to cruisers.

Cheers,
N

This truck is a BJ75 ?

I think yes ... with the flip windshield and removable top.

they had the flip windshield and removable tops on ALL 75 series trucks. that ended when the 79 series took over...a bloody shame if you ask me...
so BJ75, PZJ75, HZJ75, FJ75 all had the same configuration...

I like the HZJ79 cab, more room, and the cab was actually built for accident protection - side impact beams etc. I would think that the older style cabs would crumple quite easily.

All 60s until '86 and 70 series till '89 imported to Canada were 3B. The mines were very unhappy when they made them start buying PZs.

1985 BJ70 $1800
usual rust on fenders, frame and floor boards are solid, clean interior, mild lift springs, no engine transmission or t-case.

not sure if this is still around or not, but thought you might be interested Nick.

Thanks BCDan. Sounds interested. Tempting just to find a new engine, tranny and tcase and go.
It would be cheap and fun. Hey I think I know where and engine tranny and tcase are. :).....

I am going to have to consider all of my options.

Cheers,
N.

Nick-
I wasn't trying to be an ass, I just know that sh*t adds up quick. All it takes is time and money. I think the equation is less $ = more time and vice versa.
If you've got parts rigs laying around then damn near anything can be modded to fit. (4 runners running chevy springs). Turn it into an exo caged flat deck tree basher!
I just wouldn't expect to sell it for more than the sum of the parts/time invested.
But that's not why we're into building these anyway (save Wayne) but he builds some to make $ and invest that $ into his rigs.
Good luck and if you do wind up going for it, I'll be tuned in for the build:D

Thanks Stumpalama,

I know you weren't trying to be rude.
Its hard to comminicate like this sometimes.

Still not sure what I am going to do.
I am thinking long and hard about my options.
We will see. I am going to go back this weekend to try at meet up with them.
There was no number and its a 35min drive.
As for parts. I am going to make a big list like Wayne said.
That cruiser for $1800 might have everything I need minus engine stuff.

I don't want to bite off more than I can chew or afford.

Cheers,
N. :)
