But that's not why we're into building these anyway (save Wayne) but he builds some to make $ and invest that $ into his rigs.

you lnow, i read this post and thought to myself "self, when was the last time you invested time and money into building a rig (not buying a JDM) and sold it for more than you invested?"

myself answered and said "i can't remember the last time"

so i went ahead and tried to remember...
the last one i sold was Ol Smokey, bought it for $6000 landed, sunk a few more thousand into it and the sold it to Bruce for $1500 (dead motor, no springs etc)
before that i sold my PZJ75, i sunk $30,000 into that one and sold it for $25,000.
before that i built up a LJ71, repainted it, custom bumper, tires etc, total invested was $12,000 and sold it for $9000
i can remember what was before that.

i now have built up a PZJ70 with lift, tires, locker, turbo, intercooler, PI, custom bumper, winch, snorkle etc etc...very close to $20,000 + / - adn i would be lucky to get $12,000 for it...

i make money off premium JDM imports and loose money on my own built up trucks...

just to set the story straight...

now i have a FJ75 being done and already i am into to it for a large chunk and by the time i am done it will be close to $30,000+/- and being a gasser i doubt i will get much if i try and sell it...

but all this being said, i enjoy trying new ideas, wheeling with my buds and posting up my results...

cheers M8s

LOL, thats the way it is wayne, when you love these things and you have the money you just keep handing it out to people. I dont want to think of all the money I have lost on vehicle and sword sales - scary.

I just bought 2 custom drive shafts from Tom Woods, lockers, axles, tires, etc etc, next is the turbo - I'll never get my money out of my truck - but I don't plan on selling it either. I'll be bringing in a low kms 1HZ engine next, maybe I will try to track a new one down though - more money I'll never see a return on.

Hey Wayne. I have lost money on vehicles too, trying to make a profit. My biggest example was the Land Rover Disco I bought. The market crashed on it after I bought it. I think I lost $4500 when I cut my losses. Lesson learnt. Don't by a vehicle and fix it up (with intent of profit), if you don't mind keeping it forever. So I feel for you. Can you at least write your losses on that stuff off? It might help a bit.

Thats where I am at with the mine truck. It would be cool to have, and build, and I am sure I would have fun with it. I starting making a list. I think I was at $7800 and that was without canvas top. So I think a safer best for a finished truck now might be $10K (assuming I got the truck for $1000). (and I use my existeing rims+tires from my 74).

That was also including buying that BJ70 for $1800 for parts.
I might also be able to sell of some of the BJ70 to help recoup $500-1000 maybe.

So for $9000-10000 It would then nice condition, but still no show truck.
And truth be told, I don't want to sink that kind of money in to it. Would I break even? Perhaps. Who knows. I know I would enjoy the truck for a few years before I sold it. But I would be building it for the fun of it, and having it for ahwile. But I just don't think I want to sink that time and love into it. I think I would rather have a troopie.

Anyways, just thought I would share.
I think I might get suzuki.
Building those are alot cheaper. :)
Plus we have piles of extra parts lying around already.

Cheers,
N.

Well the only advise i would give is make sure that chasie is rust free cause if its full of cancer then its going to take alot of time effort and $$$ to fix..Panels can always be repaired but the chasie is a different storey..By the looks of that photo iam guesing the chasie would have alot of rust just my opinion..

Anyway goodluck with what ever you decide mate all i can say is the 70 series toy's are tuff as long live the 75 series...

Cheers Azza

Interesting thread. Wayne is so accurate on his numbers it's almost scary. But I know Nick has access to a pretty nice shop. Still whatever you estimate your costs to be I'd double them if not triple, and does it make sense to do it then? I like your idea of a Suzuki and you can buy some already pretty built for minimal money which makes a lot of sense. Someday not far off you will be able to get back into a cruiser at a better time for you Nick.

Find out if the engine is a 2H or a 1HZ, i've never seen a 70 series trayback with a 3B.

Although it may very well be a 3B!

Canada and Africa get them with 4 speeds usually.

The 1st 75s here had 4 cylinder 3.4s, are they the 3bs??

I have'nt done any rebuilds, but just doing small mods you soon find things that need changing and you soon blow the budget. By the look of some those pics, thats not the healthiest Cruiser I have seen. Once you start stripping it you can bet your bottom dollar you will need to spend more than you planned. If you have the time and the workshop space you could make it a longterm project.

Good luck, hope that helps

1985 BJ70 $1800
usual rust on fenders, frame and floor boards are solid, clean interior, mild lift springs, no engine transmission or t-case.
call Steve at 604-461-3540
not sure if this is still around or not, but thought you might be interested Nick.

Cheers,

Dan

It sold quick!

as for the mine truck, check the frame before you waste any time
We're just finishing off our sheet metal product line. The 70/74 series front fenders (upper and lower) and door skins are ready. Rocker and quarters are in the design stage still.
I already mentioned to you about the Suzuki metal line as well

Very cool, what is the pricing on the fenders, upper and lower? Or do you know yet?

Hey steve,

I did call one afternoon about the truck, but you where out and I was told it sold. I decided to pass on the mine truck anyways. You guys were right. I am getting some zuks instead. Its a good downzise. I found two I'm getting (one good, one parts).

Once it gets home will see what I need. I might just drive as is, and start the fix/build in the winter. I also passed the info along to my room mate (owns two LJs) and other guys in the LJ club.

Good to know about the 70 fenders.
Would make it really easy to fix in a few years.

Cheers,
N.

you're on my list of people to contact once I'm 100% on $$ and inventory levels.

Things have been very busy since our move last fall. I was hoping to have the quarter panels done for our product release but it won't happen.

I wonder too. For anyone these days, my 2 cents is just find a good 'un from Oz with minimal rust and a full floater rear axle, which this mine truck lacks. RHD ain't no big deal. I have four RHD now and one on the way!

For me if I was to snag, not saying I would, I just like some of the options of owning it:

-A project that's a pick up.
-Spare parts maybe
-Spare LHD conversion parts in case some day it becomes a nightmare to own a RHD. I'd convert mine to LHD before I'd get rid of it only because laws were to change

Honestly having to convert your RHD to LHD will never happen. If anything ever did happen you would be grandfathered in.
I think it would just be cool to own a 75 or 79.

I saw my first one coming home. Rough as a bear turd rolling in fish hooks but its a cruiser! If it was to ever sell for cheap I would buy it and keep it a bit rough. It would be a work truck.

Down the road I would love a 79 but the r151 is a peice of s*** by the sounds of it, it is the thing steering me away from one. I am pro h55 of the 75 but I am pro long cab of the 79 because I am 6'7".

weeellll, the nightmare could just become a reality if ICBC has their way.
i have asked the insurance companies here if i convert from RHD to LHD will they insure me and the answer so far is a very strong NO.
so, yes, the vehicle is grandfathered in but if you can't get insurance then what good is a RHD?
if they won't even allow you to convert it over to LHD then ... well ... life is a bitch, and not in a good way.

well if I hope that something gets sorted out I am thankful to live in bc at the moment but I would be fxxxing pissed if they cut insurance for RHDs.
What can't you get insurance wise in Ontario?
