Well .. I thought I feel very fine in this spot .. but I thought much more Diesel info share in HJ - FJ 6* forum .. and 7* forum .. and 8 * forum .. is more dificult to locate ..

Diesel forum colect all info that means important to me .. as Engine swap, diff axles .. rebuild .. a 75 series is very intersting to me .. but if I'm stay in HJ forum .. maybe I gonna loose this thread ..

FWIW the 74 and 79 are missing from your description. The BJ74 is a very common JDM import these days and the HZJ79 is the current mine truck. You'd better add them to the description. Seems to me that 72 and 76 are the only numbers in the series that Toyota didn't use.

I think the new breakdown will work nicely.

We had this discussion some time back. The difference between a HZJ76 and a HZJ77 is the suspension type,one is front coil,the other leaf.
Someone also said a LD 72 exists but I cant remember what constitutes a 72 series,maybe it is the only one not used and what next??

That could be a concern for sure, and if I read the potential change right it might not happen that way. Moderators would have to have clear parameters:

7* series tech = body issues, glass issues, doors, SOA issues, suspension mods, front and rear bumpers, modded pics, specific rust spot concerns, etc. Anything at all to do with the engine...take it to Diesel Tech.

6* series tech = same thing, and as some people have posted, they already take their 60 series specific information questions there, and most times any diesel questions get directed to the "international" forum.

4* series tech = most people get re-directed to the "international" forum for their 24V and diesel questions already...but for body/frame/tub issues it stays there.

Toyota Diesel tech...all the B series, all the H series, all the L series, and all the KZ series...

This is woodies house, and I am not sure how much of the traffic would cut down in the 40/60/80 series forum if all gasser engine tech went to one section? Imagine the wealth of information that would be created in one place though for the gasser crowd...

Culture has been built up in those sections, as this one...and that is a huge concern of any change.

I bop into the 60 and 40 series sections once in a while. There is a crossover thread right now that talks about power mods to the 2F...

Is that the concern of the suggested changes: Having to ask 60 series chassis questions in a predominantly gasser section?

Maybe there needs to be a non-Toyota diesel swap forum too, as this crosses over the 40/60 line regularly. (dunno why I'd support that as a Toy diesel seller...but whatever)

IMO, people identify their rig and their questions based on model number...particularly if they are NEW to their Cruiser. Those of us who have been around are more likely to identify with a drivetrain/axle/motor question than with a "my FJ40 makes odd noises" question. In that line of thinking, the tech forums will remain series-related. (good thot tho Denis )

The newer diesel and 70 series sections will have a huge overlap since the 70 series drivetrain tech will all land into the diesel forum. (name just 1 current user driving/ owning a petrol 70 series) In order to be consistent within the whole structure, a gasser section would have to be added as well. You can't really split the engine and tranny/ tcase issues either. So what's left inside the series sections ? Maybe not enough to justify them being separate...

I think there's more to consider than just the /chit-chat/offtopic tech/ontopic tech/ mix in the intl section. The issue as I see it, the way the IH8MUD forums have grown, and the different focuses split in (too?) many different sections, the useful information is being dispersed all over the place. I'm only talking about tech here, the chit chat or event-related discussions, are essentially time-limited.

Browsing the 40 and 70 series forums only, I'm sure missing an insane amount of very interesting stuff, but unfortunately, I don't really care for 60 series or mini trucks, and have, and probably will never venture beyond the first index page.

The absolute cruiser newbie may not even distinguish his cruiser from the series number. "my landcruiser engine makes some funny shakes". "I'm pushing the 4wd lever on my toyota jeep, but nothing happens, WTF ?!".

I was going to reply to Greg_B's post before it got edited but there is some sense to splitting up the forums along the factorymanual lines. The 55 was close enough to the 40/43/45 mechanically that it did not need its own manual. But Toyota knows there is enough difference between the 40 and the 60 that when the 60 series came out, it's own FSM was published. Same thing for the Light Duty and Heavy Duty 70 series lines, there are different manuals for the two lines.

The manuals on birfield cover both the 40 and 60 series IIRC. (at least the 1980 one does). And I have also seen some 70 series body & chassis manuals that covered L/R/B/F/H/J70 series. I think they were either split or not depending on what the needed to cover. Maybe the dealers manuals had all of the info in one book whereas the individual customer/user's repair manual had only one vehicle, or at least one rage of vehcles, covered.

The key is to not make new forum member think too much....series identification is by far the fastest method for the noobie to post a question (and the mods are quick to toss to the correct corner if they dork that up...)

I likewise rarely post in many of the sections....heck, with 2000 posts a day on the site, I likely read less than 5% of them. I would honestly never visit a 70 or diesel corner, just cause I don't own one....tho, I do have some droolage over those models.

While there are a pile of diesel options out there, breaking it down further isn't gonna happen...and given the current posts in the current series corners on gasser engines, there would be too much culture shock to create a forum for those. (and yes, I know motors move from forum to forum, like the 2F and the 3FE, but those "in the know" with those do search between the two forums...and it's EASY to search just the tech sections, or two specific forums, by using Advanced Search)

I'll think of more during the MNF game.....hehehe

Just remember everyone, if this goes thru OUR little area is almost assimilated into the big scheme of things.

As BJ60 owner, I find our International area has just enough traffic to keep up with my pace of surfing. Once I have to look at 60 series chasiss and weed thru the info........it will be difficult.

Remember we have a small club inside a club. I know we have a lot of overseas members, but most of the canukians are in this area. We discuss everything in this one. Like River Shiver and auto thief, where would that go.

Also where would the archives end up?

Sure there is a lot of 7x guys here, but you are not the mainstay, you get alot of input from hj60, HD80 etc etc.....

This may dilute us alot. We may be too small for this change now.

Right now, I only go straight to intl forum, I rarely visit the others, this change would have me looking at 3-4 forums to see what going on with whom.

For me, I vote stay the same. Maybe Stone could use some extra help for moderating. Heck, I am on here almost daily. I would help if needed.

We just need to be diligent tossing things out to the other forums if needed.

Most importantly, I suggest Peter as moderator because I miss the Peter vs. Wayne debates that once were common on the RMLCA list but have been missing for far too long. What better way to learn?

Quality vs. Quantity. Peter contributes lots elsewhere. In his few posts he has most likely contributed far more than most (myself included).

I'm open to whoever for 2nd moderator, just prefer Peter for sheer entertainment value

Never gave it much though, but guys with right hand drive gassers are gonna get the much needed info in the 40 45 80 etc forums.

We come to this forum for one reason, we all share the diesel sickness.

Like my company name implies, RADD CRUISERS, Rob and Dawson diesel cruisers.

International diesel cruisers.

PS, if you think Wayne and Peter are entertaining, you should of seen the days when BJ on Roids was hitting the pirates board. He was our one and only hardcore diesel nut running comps with a 3B.

Now he has a 45 with I think a toyota gasser V-8, very dissapointing.

My 'power to the people' commoner uprising can easily be coopted by bestowing me the very tyranical tyranous tyrant title that I set out to fight. I like the idea of the addition of "Diesel" to the forum name--I don't like the idea of rolling this into a general diesel discussion or an engine swap tech--I think it should stay with Toyota diesel only, not Cummins etc. Sure basic diesel tech questions re: Cummins can be answered, but how much does everybody know here about a Cummins engine? There are Cummins boards out there I'm sure. So regarding Woody's post #80, maybe the name should be

"Toyota Diesel Tech and 24 Volt [Electrical] Systems."

I think engine swaps are pretty much engine and series specific--folks can come into "Toyota Diesel..." for questions on the engine, engine-tranny compatibility, engine control systems, and maybe say the 60 series forum for engine mounts (?)...

I have to also agree with people who say that what makes this forum distinctive is both the people who frequent it and the culture that has developed within it. With that in mind, I draw 2 conclusions:

1. we should not split things up so that the community and culture here is fragmented

2. some chat along the lines of pics of Oz LCs to drool over or Wayne's River Shiver test runs in an LJ should be allowed because that is what members of this community are about and what they are doing. If you want to see things get lost in the noise, stick one of Wayne's or Roscoe's 'non-tech' posts over in the general chat section.

My last concern is that this culture and community not get dispersed. I assume most of what has been going on in "Inter'l" will then go on relatively unchanged in "Toyota Diesel..."

Cool...Welcome aboard Peter...if the powers will it.

I think splitting 70 series off will not dimish the tech aspect of a new "diesel" list. 40/60/80 have their own, and a culture has been built there. Might take a while, but I "guess" the same thing would happen in a 70 series list, seeing all the models of 7* series there are. If Stone is willing, considering he is an avowed BJ74 man...he could moderate that list, moving diesel tech to the new diesel list.

Brownbear...much the same as your having a BJ60 and coming here to spend most of your time happens...I would "guess" the same crowd would continue to hang here, and adjust. Simply the 7* series would get it's own tech list for body/chassis and axle/brakes.

Either way this evolves...split or simply a new name, I will also adjust and I welcome a second moderator of Peters knowledge.

I support Behemoth60 for second moderator. I hope he'll be aggressive in kicking out the bull that has been flying around here. What good is a tech forum when you have to think how accurate is the info, or is there any hidden agenda in the post.

The only concern I have in having two Canadians as moderators is in what others said above about how the majority of people in the forum is Canadian. I have nothing against Canadians and some of my best buddies on the internet are Canadians, but there are Americans, Aussies, Kiwis, South Americans and Europeans coming to this board also. When many of the topics only pertain to a select group, and worse yet, if the forum is perceived as too clubby, they would feel excluded and will ultimately leave.

I am not volunteering to moderate at all. I have too many commitments to be an effective forum mod. But I would like the mods to be especially sensitive to this possibility.

Did a bunch of cleanup and moved a bunch of threads tonight. Don't tell Junk, but I moved a tire size question thread into his 80 series Tech forum...LOL! We'll see how long it takes him to figure it out...and if he says anything.
