My power steering pump is leaking in my 96 FJ80 and my mechanic (toyota guy) says that he has problems all of the time with leaking toyota remanufactured pumps after replacement. He installed two on his own 4runner, but there still was a leak. He told me to see if I could find a new one, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any more advice about this first.

Thanks-

PS pumps do not come remanufactured from Toyota. They are new only.

The correct part number for your application is: 44320-60182

Make sure you replace the o-ring to the block housing as well as the high pressure gaskets.

Oring PN: 90301-73004

High Pressure gasket: 44327-30030

I just resealed mine last November and no more leaks. Took about 2.5 hours to remove, reseal and replace.

anyone have the ps pump rebuild kit part number handy?

its like $60 - right?

I don't have the dealer #, I just call Dan, but some aftermarket #'s. I have used a bunch of the Gates kits in earlier pumps (mini) with zero failure. They aren't rocket science, a seal and a few o-rings and are ~$15.:hillbilly:

GATES Part # 348407 & EDELMANN Part # 8826, these are for the 1FZ type pump.

PS pump noise

I just had mine replaced and it making a whinning noise which sounds like the gear. Does oil have to be added or is it lubricated by the engine oil?

Yeah you have to add power steering fluid.

I use ATF

I wish I was having the luck you guys are. I resealed my stock pump and it started leaking in short order. I have now been through 3 re-man'd pumps (1 from Checker and 2 from Napa) that all have a very minor, yet annoying leak from the back of the pump.

I have a lifetime warranty on the pump, so I'm just waiting for it to get worse before I try again.

New would have been the way to go, but I'm planning on junking the engine this winter and didn't think the expenditure was justified in a new pump.

I bought my 80 in Feb, power steering pump was leaking. Local shop replaced it with a NAPA model, which was immediately diagnosed with having a bad bearing. Bought a Toyota pump, luckily the local shop replaced the NAPA part with the Toyota with zero labor cost to me. However, this one is now making some major gear noise when it warms up (which goes away if I put some pressure on the steering wheel).

I still have my old leaky one, I just have to find time to rebuild it, and hopefully I can finally get the problem licked.

Fixed PS noise with drill!

So for what its worth my power steering was moaning a lot so I did the whole system flush thing. Good for a month or two, then more moaning. Mechanic said pump was starving for fluid because filter inside tank had become clogged. New tank is $150 so I took it out and cleaned it with isopropyl let it dry added all new fluid again. Couple months started moaning again

So I took the tank off and stuck a long drill bit up the tube and drilled a hole through the filter. Cleaned it really good with isopropyl to get rid of debris. It has been over a year - no moaning!

all7belts , the tank your talking about is the reservoir ? there is a filter in the ~5/8" supply tube ?
thanks

There is a screen in the reservoir.

The reservoir are very small I think. Make sure you keep them really full. I would like to place mine with a larger one.

Agree, the problem isn't so much small, but shallow, they tend to suck air when at angles.

Yes what I called a tank is a reservoir - or to eliminate any further confusion the thing-a-majig you pour the power steering fluid in. There is a filter of some kind across the middle of it - not in the tube. If you take it out and clean it and hold it up to the light no light passes through. Cant access the filter from the top because the resevoir is constructed with a strainer kind of thing in the opening. What I drilled through going up the 5/8" tube was more substantial than I expected - like an 1/8" of white plastic. I assumed it was just because it was the supporting edge of the filter because the tube is on the edge.
You can buy aftermarket filters that install to the hose but if your worried about not having a filter you should probably pop for a new reservoir
