Hi All,

I've been daily driving my FJ62 for quite awhile now and I absolutely love it (aside from risking my life every time I merge onto the interstate). It's come time to do so much need maintenance (shackles, shocks, bushings, radiator, fuel sender, etc.). Now that the first-gen Sequoia's are pretty reasonable, I was thinking of picking one up for a daily driver while I work on my FJ (I'm very slow when it comes to these things). Future speaking, would the power plant from the Sequoia be a potential candidate for a swap into the FJ? I've searched this forum and I haven't seen it mentioned so I am guessing there is some obvious issue that I am missing but I thought I'd check with you all.

Thanks,

Chase H

I have both a 60 and a I'm 07 Sequoia with the 4.7 4.7 is superior to 2F for sure.

Would be cool to keep the swap in the Toyota family, but if I was engine swapping, i would go diesel

I thought it would be cool to keep it in the family. The only reason I was thinking the Sequoia would be a good candidate is because I am planning to pick it up as a daily while I work on the FJ.

The 2uz is a good motor and is swapable in a 60 series. However a LS motor is significantly by quite a bit more swap friendly than a 2uz and gives more power per dollar. Parts for a LS are also significantly cheaper. You can get a used tahoe/suburban for 2 or 3k with a LS motor. The LS motor also takes up less engine bay space than a 2uz.

But how would you swap the motor while daily drivimg it?:hmm:

I asked Slee about this, several years ago (for an FJ40) and he suggested getting a 100-series drivetrain and swapping all that in (engine, trans, xfer) as it was simpler to do. I suspect that rule applies here, too - although a Sequoia engine is easier to find. My objection to the 4.7 is that it's just not all that powerful (at least at my elevation) and requires that you flog it pretty hard.

Hmmm, must definitely be an elevation thing or you’re an old drag racer. We had a 2004 sequoia for 13 years and was always really impressed how well it pushed that heavy tub around. Always dreamed about that motor in my 62...I think it would throw a 60 series around like a rag doll.
But I am at sea level, sooo....

I'm also at sea level and spoke to a couple friends who own a Sequoia. They all reported that they felt it had a decent amount of power.

I'm no drag racer, but I do live at 7000'. 0-60 times for my FJ40 are ~26 seconds. One day I will do a 0-60 in my FJ62, and that should be a hoot as well.

The 4.7 hauls a$$ compared to the 2F. it's towing capacity is over 6,000 lbs compared to the 3,600 lb capacity of the 60.
Plus, I heard it's right up there with the 22R(and RE) and 3.4 5VZ-FE in terms of quality Toyota power plants.

I think it'd be cool to upgrade to the 2UZ to keep a toyota inline 6 as the powerplant, but I'd have to have money to burn to do that.

I don't think you'll go wrong with an LS swap. Do some reading on the LQ9 powerplant. It's the 6.0 that was used from 02 to 07. Makes good power at lower RPMs too. It's what I plan to eventually do with my 62.

The package we found is a 5.3 from a 04 Silverado with 42k on it. 😁
A stock 5.3 in a 60 series is no slouch either. My brother in law's 03 Silverado weights 6K with the fiberglass canopy on it and the 5.3 can really get up and move. After having torn it down over the last couple weeks though (at barely 200K miles at that), I HIGHLY recommend using synthetic oil and substituting a quart of MMO in with it on each change. The hydraulic valve train and the cam bearings will thank you.

If you're going to have it apart at all before swapping it in, I also recommend upgrading the rocker arm trunnions. The OEM GM trunnions in the rockers are a known failure point. I put a COMP set in my brother in law's when we built the new (otherwise stock) heads. Very impressed with the quality over the GM parts.
