sooo clean...

next on the list was the clutch fork and throw-out bearing. got the old bearing removed, pressed on the new one, put some anti-seize on the pivot points and the fork was good to go. i installed it and held it in place with an old suspension bushing.
then i put the transmission on the trans jack, slid it under the rig and grabbed the 4 bolts needed. a dab of loctite each and then it was time to "stab" the transmission. once i had everything lined up, it went right in. having a proper trans jack is definelty a plus for this installation.

thanks guys. i'll continue the write-up tomorrow.

Stop it.. I want the answers NOW!!!!!!

You mind hauling a plasma cutter back to Stockton from Calico fer me??

:D

This looks SO awesome Georg! The more I see how much work is going into this, the more I'm glad I'm having you do it:flipoff2:
If I did this it'd look like s***..I just don't have the patience...that reminds me, did I ask if it'll be ready for pick-up tomorrow:)

VERY cool, I don't know how I missed this thread until know...

A couple of questions...

1. I see a bunch of talk of using the Toybox on the H55F, does Marlin have the H55F output shaft made for his Toybox yet? I didn't see it on his site but I have heard it was coming sooner or later. I've considered reworking my 62 if the option was available, I wish I had the room in my 40 but it looks like the Marks 4WD Aus. gears are the only low range option in the SWB setup.

2. Pilot bearing, does the 3FE pilot bearing OD match that of a standard 2F? For some reason I thought that it was slightly larger?? I seem to remember this being an issue in past conversions...

3. Flywheel bolts, once again I seem to remember the 3FE crank having slightly larger bolts than the 2F flywheel had, thus the 2F flywheel had to be drilled out to the larger size, am I up in the night again??

Earlier in the thread there was some confusion as to the output splines on trannies... 3 spd trans = 10 spl, H42 in FJ40/55 to 1980 = 16 spline, H42 8/80' & later = 19 spline :D

Great thread, I'm excited to see how it turns out

NICE JOB!
It looks so nice a shiny and purdy!!!
Cant wait to hear how it all comes out!

hey kurt.
i can't answer all these questions for you. but here's what i know:

1) not sure if they're available yet. brett did all the leg work with marlin regarding the h55f. i think marlin was working on the shaft but it was'nt available yet.

2) the pilot bearing fit perfect. had to tap it in the same way they normally require.

3) yes, the crank bolts are slightly different. i reused the FJ62 flex plate bolts. they are the right thread ( dooh  ) and the length works out well also. even though the standard flywheel is a little thicker than the flex plate, they're still long enough to reach the bottom of the holes in the crank. the flexplate uses two spacers and is slightly thicker than the domestic flex plates i've encountered so the difference in thickness between the flexplate setup and the flywheel is negligeable (sp?!).

ok. so after i got the trans installed it was time to mate the doubler to it. i chose to install these two units seperately since there was'nt much info out there about fitment or clearance issues. also, they're much easier to move around as smaller units and they slide together easy enough. another reason why i asembled everything on the bench first. and doing so paid dividends cause everything went super smooth once it came to the actual install.
here's a pic of the doubler on the jack:

since i don't have a car hoist at the shop (landlord does'nt want one there and that's ok) i am doing the install on this wth the wagon on jack stands and car ramps for the rear. luckily i had it up just high enough to be able to wheel the trans jack under it with the trans and doubler. mating the doubler to the trans took a little bit of effort since the splines are cut fairly square at both ends of the shafts but once i had them lined up properly, they went together just fine. without the adjustability of the jack this would have been a real bitch, especially with my depth perception issues.
MVC-023S.JPG

after a little bit of wiggling and pushing the two assemblies mated together perfectly. i then bolted them together with a drop of loctite on each bolt and called it a good day.
don aka fc187 will be starting on the custom cross member today while i do some of the work on the interrior. i need to remove the trans tunnel and replace it with the one i salvaged from the FJ60 donor. then i need to cut a hole in the back of the tunnel for the toy box shifter. to make this easier i measured them before installing the doubler. it's almost exactly 7.5" from the center of the 4spd shifter to the center of the toy box shifter. should be easy enough to get an opening cut in the right spot with the hole saw.

cool write up just put a 420 dubla set up in mine too the low low low is great.... yours is much cleaner:D

cool!

are you gonna bring it to katemcy? i'll be there again. would'nt miss it!

thanks gary!:)

i don't think the rig will be ready for katemcy and i doubt brett plans on going.:frown: maybe i can start working on convincing him to go next year.

I have a toybox installed behind a H55F. Mudrak bolted the H55F and toybox together for me. I still am working out the transfer case linkage and cross member for the front driveshaft but am driving it. I can post up pictures when I finalize the transfer case linkage. I cut a hole for the toybox shifter but am thinking I will still have room to mount the tuffy console behind it.

The biggest problem I have come across is that the top on the transfer case is close to the undercarriage but is going to work fine after the crossmember is modified to give just alittle more room for travel. If I wouldn't of installed the 1" body lift, then it would not of worked without really lowering the transfer case down a lot or cutting the undercarriage.

This is a great writeup. The pictures are nice.
