I have a toybox installed behind a H55F. Mudrak bolted the H55F and toybox together for me. I still am working out the transfer case linkage and cross member for the front driveshaft but am driving it. I can post up pictures when I finalize the transfer case linkage. I cut a hole for the toybox shifter but am thinking I will still have room to mount the tuffy console behind it but will found out.

So the shaft exists

cool!

are you gonna bring it to katemcy? i'll be there again. would'nt miss it!

thats the plan, Round up will be its shake down run as well ... cant wait to drink some Shiner with ya again

The biggest problem I have come across is that the top on the transfer case is close to the undercarriage but is going to work fine after the crossmember is modified to give just alittle more room for travel. If I wouldn't of installed the 1" body lift, then it would not of worked without really lowering the transfer case down a lot or cutting the undercarriage.

This is a great writeup. The pictures are nice.

very cool! gary does great work. how long ago did you guys tackle this project? got any pics?

I thought it wasn't an output shaft, but a 19-spline input gear for the minitruck gearbox?? And cut the H55F output shaft to about 3", like you would for Jerry Nichols 203-splitcase doubler setup?

Steve

Here's the deal...I spoke with Marlin himself at length about this project as the original plan was to set this rig up with the late model H42 & keep the extension spacer (for the lurkers that don't know, the 86 & 87 FJ60 4spd came w/ a spacer that made the H42 the same length as a H55:) )

...that way if I ever wanted to convert to a diesel/H55 combo, I'd be all set from the Toybox back (Crossmember, drivelines etc). All you have to do to make a 4.7 H42 Toybox ready for an H55 is change the input gear from a 10 spline to a 19 spline. Marlin said he had the 19 spline gear & could swap it for me, but there were some issues related to the length of the 19 spline output on the H42...can't really remember the details and I don't have my notes from that conversation in front of me

In the end I decided against spending the extra money on a project that is already draining my pocketbook:grinpimp:

I will look for some older pictures but don't have a working camera to take any new ones yet. It is still a working project. I still need to modify the rear crossmember.

as long as everything goes according to plan, the x-member in this 62 should be done before the weekend is thru. i will post some pics of course!

time for some more updates!!!

i got the rig back from fc today. he finished the cross member last night so now it's time for me to finish the electrical, the clutch hydraulics and the drive lines.

here's a shot of the bitchin cross member/skid plate/trans mount fc built for the project.

and a close-up of the mount itself. we decided to stick with the stock mount for ease of axcess and replacement. took a lot of time partially due to the fact that these mounts do not sit horizontal.
also, since the frame is tapered it would have been a major pita to get this installed with straight holes for the mount bolts. so fc slotred them for ease of installation and removal. turned out really slick and fits like a glove.

That crossmember is awesome!

is fc on this board Georg?

he's not on here very frequently. much easier to get a hold of him on the pbb. his handle is fc187 on both boards. we share the shop.

then i installed the starter and hooked it back up. next was the clutch slave cylinder which went into place easily as well. i then had to run the hydraulic hard line from the clutch master to the slave. i wanted to run the stock fj60 line to make it look as clean as possible. they are routed and mounted in slightly different location than on the 60 but i was able to use the oem line with most of the oem mounting bracketts. looks pretty much stock. just kind of a bitch to get in there with the engine and everything else already in place. took a little bit of time to get it installed, mounted and hooked up but it was well worth it in the end.
dan aka D'animal stopped by to drop off some parts so i promptly put him to work. i let the clutch hydraulics gravity bleed at first to flush as much of the old fluid out as possible and then had dan pump the pedal so i could bleed it. works perfect! :)

after i'm done with the trans conversion brett will be taking the 62 to luke at 4x4labs so they can both work on the soa conversion. so in order to make it movable until then, we decided to run only the rear drive shaft. i was able to combine the main body of the rear shaft with the slip yoke part of the front shaft to create a shaft with the proper length. sounds a little hoaky but it works perfect. once brett get;s the soa done, he will have proper drive shafts made and there really is no need to spend the money twice.

had to call it a day after that cause my eye was starting to bug me pretty good. but i'm happy with the progress this week. by the middle of next week the cruiser should be ready for a test drive. gotta finish the electrical and put some fluids in her.

damn, that's a sweet skid.

thanks. don has these down to a science. this is the first one he's built for a 60 series cruiser but he's done a bunch on 40s and a few other rigs. every time he builds one they get slightly better. this one turned out so well that even after all the welding, all the holes lined up perfect. you can litterally install all six bolts with two fingers. no prybar or hammer needed.
the skid plate doubles as a cross member, transmission mount and track-bar mount. they're strong enough to support the weight of the entire vehicle. just ask our forklift!:grinpimp:

i seriously doubt it. there are just too many different variations and the way they're designed, he really builds them "onto" the frame for each application. we've discussed it and it would be too much hassle to try to come up with something even remotely "universal".

besides, here's our definition of "universal": something that made to work with different applications with some mods. but it won't really work with anything the way it is. in other words: useless!

Damn,
That sure is a nice unit on there! Too bad there cant be a bolt up sort of deal!
Cant wait to hear about the test drive!

Nice job Georg!
