Well I was looking around underneath yesterday afternoon and saw this. The support that the upper part of the rear shock on the driver's side has rusted through.

It looks like the only thing that attaches to this support is the rear shocks and the barracker for the muffler.

So I have to get this fixed.

I've looked at the other parts if the frame and everything looks OK. FYI, this is THE area that I was worried about when I first took the LC to the first mechanic as soon as I bought it. He said it looks OK and not to worry about it. Oh well.

I'm thinking of taking it to:
  1. The muffler shop that installed the muffler since they have welding equipment.
  2. A 4X4 shop who I am sure has welding equipment and probably does this kind of stuff all the time.
  3. A welding shop.
Do you guys have any thoughts on the best course of action?

Thanks.

Is this the cross member (tube)? If so... The bad news is YES it is as bad as it looks. It is TOAST. The good news is... this is very common and a somewhat easy fix for someone with welding skills.

I have seen a number of threads on these. Search "rear shock" mounts and read up.

Yes this is the round cross member.
So I've got to find someone with welding skills.
Thanks for the info.

this was the thing that triggered my frame off restoration....how are the frame rails towards the back(the open rail parts each side of the spare tire)?

My rear frame looks almost as bad as that. Only mine is right where the rear shackle mount is. I think I'm just going to box it in for now since that section is open channel and do a frame swap next year. Does any one know if a 62 frame is identical to a 60 frame?

Tranny mounts are in different places, farther back on a 62 b/c of the auto. Same otherwise I believe???

Looks like the rot was caused by a missing or leaking tailpipe. I had the same thing happen to my rear sway bar mount on the left side. Fortunately, the frame wasn't affected.
