Will thirds from a 72 fj40 work in a 90 fj60 axle. Any help would be great.

Yes.
May need to modify d/shaft as possibly a different bolt pattern.

Yes, they will bolt right in, however you are losing some strength (fine spline pinion versus course spline pinion). They should have the same gear ratio from the factory, so you don't gain gears (unless your 72' 3rd has aftermarket gears)... Pinion flange will need to be converted.

I am going to be converting the pinion flange anyways. I am just looking for the extra width in the 40. I will be calling you pretty soon kurt for the flanges.
