Hi All,

Is this tranny and transfercase a 5 speed with a split transfer case or a 4 speed? Since the back of the tranny has that extended area, red circle, before the transfercase does this mean its a 5 speed. I have seen a 4 speed with a split tranfercase and it's missing that extended section.

There is another 4 speed transmission to a split transfer case for sale. That one has the e-brake on the output. However there is no spacer. Can that transfer case be used with a H55 that has the spacer on the tranny?

I want an H55 with split transfer case that e-brake

Just call Valley Hybrids @orangefj45 and have them build you an assembly.

We can build that combo for you. We have new 5-speeds and transfer cases in stock along with the e-brake components.

Happy to help!

Thanks but I like to do my own work. That’s the fun in owing Land Cruisers.
We can supply all the needed parts as well. We keep them in stock ….

So are the 5 speeds interchange with the 4 speeds with any split t-case or is there different splines I need to consider to mate them up?

@orangefj45 has a thread going titled H55 and splitcase tech, lots of good rearing and pics in there.

spline count is not the issue,
issue is the early splitcases do not have the recess for the 5th gear oiler, which is needed for the H55

I don’t think so.

The output for the transfercases I believe are all the same. Even with diesel and gasoline engines.

I think the 4 speed transfer cases are also geared slightly lower.

Thanks I’ll read that

found the thread:

The output splines are the same for all H55F and 4spds mated to an H55F. However not all split-cases have the provisions for the 5th gear oiler there we consider mandatory. It won't be found on a 8/1980 - ~10/1982 case. More info here:

So the split t-case I was looking at was from a Fj40 therefore it was early 80’s abs would not have the oiler.

I’ve bought a lot of stuff from you, always great service and parts.

Fwiw, this is the oiler relief you'll be looking for:

Unfortunately you can't definitively determine if it's there without doing some disassembly.

Only the 81 and 82 split cases didn’t have the 5th gear oiler provision. Doesn’t matter if the case is from an FJ40 or FJ60.
Any split case 83 and newer has the 5th gear oiler ( and 4wd indicator switch ).

Good to know, as my H42 and split case came from a 1983. That means I can upgrade to a H55 and keep my split case? Thinking of doing that and a lower range gear set at the same time, so that would allow the inspection of the internals just to make sure it has the oiler, like @cruiseroutfit mentions. Both of you guys, @orangefj45 and @cruiseroutfit are amazing in that you give your time to forums like this, despite how busy you are running your day to day business.

Thanks!

Yes that Tcase will work with the H55F but you’ll need to make sure since 83 was the first year for the oiler.

The 34mm cases can be machined/clearanced for the low gear sets but typically you end up punching thru the case in 2 or 3 spots. Those can we tig welded shut by adding material to the outside.
The 38mm cases lend themselves to the lower gear sets much better.

Hope that helps.
