Hopefully there are no thieves stalking out thread, and learning our methods!

I have a '69 BSA Victor and its starting procedure is about 5 steps including advancing the piston before kicking it. (It is a perfect DWI test.) I bet I could let 100 people try and start it and no one would be able to. Of course, they could just chuck it in the back of a pick up, too. lol

I don’t think anyone will be throwing a 60 series in the back of a truck…

Ours got stolen on a Sunday afternoon and after recovering it 8 months later I came up with a kill switch that requires resetting it each time after you shut the car off, figured I'd be too lazy after awhile to just flip a switch. I assumed if it deters a thief for more than a minute or so they would leave. But then again, if they want it, they will take it no matter what.

Any concepts you can share? Latching relay or something?

This was my solution. I could have used just a toggle switch but figured I'd get lazy and stop using it. This needs to be reset each time you start the car and goes open when you turn the car off.

I've seen the cruiser cult setup and it's one of the nicest setups, very worth the money. I keep mine in my yard behind a fence, you'd need to steal or somehow move my Ram 3500 and not wake me or the dogs up while doing it to ever have a chance at the FJ62.

I use several things. The key hole on the passenger side and the trunk is blocked, the key cannot be inserted. On the driver's side, in place of the lock, there is a round fingerprint reader. The engine can only be started if you activate a "device that is factory" in front of it. The Teltonika Telematics FMM130 GPS continuously logs the position, ignition status, fuel level, door (hood) status, etc. on my server. If necessary, I can remotely activate the venturi valve actuator to stop the engine. And on top of that, there are 2 airtags, one easily found and one well hidden.

In my fj40 with LS swap i have a ravelco chip. I cannot drive the truck without the chip works like and immo chip. You need an ecu for this to work. May operate on a 62 series.

Does having a kill switch wired to the starter interrupt the ECU at all?!? I've read it has to spend a short while relearning after being disconnected. But that isn't the case if you cut power to the starter...right?
I think I am good thats why i did it. But the internet could be wrong.

I just make sure mine looks like it won't make it out of sight before breaking down. But if I have to overnight in a sketchy neighborhood I remove my shifter (nv4500 so it just screws off at the floor)
Good luck driving away. But also, it will probably break down within a couple blocks anyway...

I don't love killing the starter because it makes it obvious what the problem is to a thief, and it's not that hard to just push start it if it's a manual. If you kill spark or fuel they are now trying to decide if they troubleshoot an old car's spark/fuel issue while in the process of grand theft auto. I'm not a car thief, but it seems risky to me.

I have a 65 Lightning!
Off topic but not many of us that have both. Cheers!

This is a great thread and all. I’ve learned a lot. Only problem is now I know how to steal all your trucks….

:steer:

Since Betty Blue will be arriving in Europe soon and we will be traveling to some, ahem, cities not so safe as Munich, I'm thinking about having Dieter install a car alarm. I know F all about car alarms and/or if this is just a waste of money considering any real car thief will be able to disable one in a few minutes. I already have a steering wheel lock and a brake pedal lock and will place a tracking device somewhere seeeeeecret.
One of my best friends has a 70 and no alarm but I think my fully restored 60 might present a much more tempting target?
Should I still pull the trigger on an alarm? Thoughts?

My 2 cents (for whatever that’s worth): You can probably throw the steering wheel lock away. Brake/clutch lock, tracking devices (consider a few air tags placed in different locations with speaker and copper wires cut so they don’t make any noises), and consider Cruiser Cults kill switch. I have all those on my rig.

I didn’t do an alarm because I didn’t want to introduce any weird electrical gremlins. You can get a blinking light for the dash if you are really wanting something that people see if peering into your window. Similarly, that’s about the only function of a steering wheel lock really.
