Looking for FJ60 5spd and t-case...
a little education on 4sps.
1973+ to 1980 have a 16 spline output shaft that wears commonly where the drive gear (aka input gear) for t-case sits to the point to which it must be replaced. A $250 part new (the output is a "main shaft"), plus bearings, plus synchros, PLUS LABOR, etc. IF a 4sp of that vintage has a worn output shaft run away from it. You also cannot determine this unless the t-case has been split off. Combo units don't tell the story. Used 4sps cost under $150 fom most private parties. You will also need:
-bellhousing
-4sp t-case shifter system
-if you use your 3sp t-case, you will need a spacer or rare PTO gear, Datsun B210 rear axle bearing (see tech tips Ih8mud), transistional input gear ($75 new many vendors)
-...and ideally you should switch to 4sp flywheel and diaphragm clutch (3sps are 3 finger style).
1981-1985 (March '85) SHORT split case 4sps have a better 19 spline output and do not suffer the same wear as earlier 4sps. As pointed out, US models do not have the parking brake drum system. Those parts can be found at a number of Vendors (I sold them for $375 all new parts) and I believe robert at Liquid Offroad honors that price as well. In regular applications (FJ40's 1981+, FJ60's, J70's etc) they use a cradle mount under the tranny and DO NOT USE A BELLHOUSING MOUNT). The can hang on the 1973+-1980 bellhousings set up for 4sps.
May 1985+ and All H55 factory 5sps are LONG trannys. They use the split case (same non parking drum system in US) and it is my believe that if used without a belly mount you may have issues as the weight of the transfer case is 4" back of the SHORT position- making a 18 5/8" driveline in rear with f/2F application (I am worried about the 'moment' on the clutch, bellhousing etc).
H55 5sps. Must use a 1983+ transfer case (for all intensive purposes). They NEVER WERE AVAILABLE NEW IN US TRUCKS. Used H55 trannys if they must be rebuilt can be expensive- almost as much as a new one with TLCA discount (approx $1,800)- you have been warned. I would only buy a new one only.
I hope this helps
(subnote: current topic on pirate4x4 speaks of H41 vs H42 and early H41. All the US trannys are H42 with 3.55:1 first gear. early H41's are beyond rare with 10 spline output shafts and 5.29 (5.3):1 first. 1972/3-1980 H41's have 4.9:1 first, 1981+ H41's have 4.8:1 first (same gear as H55) AND all are SHORT)
