Do you think I can cut down the reservoir and plastic weld it back together? Or should I try a remote reservoir?

SendCutSend is very cheap for what they do. And then turn around is pretty quick - much faster than anyone locally. They allowed me to economically have parts built that I could either not have built, or would looked like crap. The laser cut stuff is just looks so good.
yes, the back could be an air tank, but it will require someone with better skills with aluminum than me.
