I got an 87 fj 60 with stock strait 6. The previous owner put in a aftermarket aluminum gas tank but didn’t hookup the fuel hoses. The land cruiser has a black thing in the rear panel(pictured) that fuel lines run in and out. I am wondering what this is for and if I can bypass it. There is only three hookups on the tank ( main, return, and breather) but 5 or 6 fuel hose hookups next to the filler neck hose.

That black plastic contraption is the "vapor separator". The stock gas tank has several breather pipes along all sides of the tank to ensure it breathes air & vapor & not liquid gasoline. All the vapor lines lead to that plastic vapor separator. It's function is to separate vapors from liquid gas that gets burped into the vapor lines. Unfortunately, your aftermarket tank has only one breather which could very well cause problems when the cruiser is at an angle with a full tank.
The stock tank with all its breather pipes and that separator still has a hard time keeping liquid fuel from burping into the charcoal canister when the tank is filled to the top.

Look around the edges of the tank, it may have breathers on all corners, if you are lucky.
Try to get them hooked up, as gas / vapour expansion is a real thing that can be a headache.
That grommet around the filler tube is available from Toyota. Get a new one while you are in there.
Its what stops your rear quarter panel from filling with water and crap.
My advise would be to drop the tank if it hasn't been used recently. Or even if it has. You can then hook
up the breather lines are required and clean it all up. That tank has no drain? If it was out, you could see how the pick up works and maybe build a or have a lower pick up area created. Totally flat bottom will be tough when fuel is low. Look at Man-a-Fre to see their tank, or find a picture. It's the one I have..
I have a long range tank, but run a diesel so not critical for the fuel emissions thing, but I still connected
the expansion lines just for peace of mind. Plus I can go 800 miles now!!

Good idea it has aftermarket brand new fasteners so should be really easy. I couldn’t find where the heck this tank came from... but it looks like there are only three hookups. One on top next to breather (pictured) and another one on the front face ¾ the way up so with the laws of physics it doesn’t seem like it’ll work. Are u suggesting I drill new vapor breathers? The tank is brand new and never has had fuel in it... thanks for the help!!
Here is a couple of pics of my tank. It's got a vent in each corner. My tank is designed for internal fuel pump, that
is why the detent on top. If yours looks different don't worry, I removed the pump and just installed a pick up tube
with a filter sock on the end.
The bottom pics are of the sump, it's about 2" ( internal shot there too ) and has a drain in it. If you remove the tank, look
in with a flashlight and make sure there is some kind of sump area that reduces fuel movement with minimum fuel. It should
but be good to check. If you already have 2-3 vents, then use the ones you have. I wouldn't drill into the tank unless
you really need to. It looks like a professionally built tank so it should be all okay. The only thing I don't see is a drain
in the bottom of your tank. Does it have a drain?

Gas tank does have a drain on the right corner, it’s has IRA logo same as yours and looks very similar, thinking this is probably a mana fre tank...some sorta float hooked up on the top with a long wire hanging down. So I’m just gonna hope that the design of this tank doesn’t need a vapor filter . Main fuel line should be the lower hookup and return on the top?

I do live in Hawaii and emissions aren’t a thing to worry about...
Its not the emissions, it is the expansion of petrol gases. That is what the plastic contraption in the inner
rear deals with. What I did is connect the two on the front together the two rear vents together and I just
ran them up together, I was just covering my bases.
I just remembered that I had a hard steel line, running parallel with my fuel lines up to the front on the
frame that is open so I vented the two forward lines together up that steel line. It vents up below the heater
side of the firewall. You could look for that line.
