Actually, the 3B and the 13B-T were regarded as the best diesels fo their time. The 2H wasn't as durable. 3Bs can run for 600,000km with NO SERVICE except oil and filter change... I know because the Old Faithful still runs and is not an oil guzzler. Never had anything done to the engine, apart from replacing the glow plugs twice...

You havent heard of the aussie HJ60 with 1.3 million klms yet?? Toyota Australia used him and his 60 in newspaper ads.Its only had a clutch and alternator replacement.:D

I think a 12HT would run rings(excuse the pun) around the B engines for longevity. NeaRly all the aussie HJ61 have post 400000klms on the clock and going strong;)

yes, I think alot of people forget what Detroit was churning out in the 80's... for the most part - crap!

The LC comp would have been what - a 80's Suburban, a Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer, maybe the Blazer and Bronco?

which one of those fixed up 80's rides can still get 10-20k (or more)? Bout the only thing people want the Jeeps for is the D44's, the others - scrap metal?

In oz its only competitors was the still evolving Patrol and the Range Rover. The RR only had 2 doors with a 3.5 V8 with a 4sp

Yep, if you want to find out what are the really reliable rigs out there, just look at what they use in OZ ;)

Of course, we can't get these vehicles there... Because it would cause such chaos in the Auto Industry that severe economic downfall would follow. And we know how bad that is for profits... Ever read Toyota's Mission Statement?... Really smart people at the direction of that company!

Just because it's a bad year for chukars don't take it out on the 60. :)

Considering the condition you bought your 60 in, I would assume the 2F could very well be abused. I'm able to survive California freeways in my 60 and they are significantly worse than Seattle / Washington. Use this as a great excuse to get a 12ht or 1hz-t. You're pretty close to Radd Cruisers in B.C.

Funny, The only problems I ever have with my 81 FJ60 are engine related. '93 Chevy 350 with fuel injection. Oh yea the batteries go bad every 5-6 years.

Now the rust proofing is another issue.

One other note. The original 2f from my 60 was transplanted into a buddies 84 FJ60 and still lives on. I think he has about 175,000 on my old engine to date with nothing more than a valve job and a front crank seal.

I broke a birfield once on my 40. I had my right foot to the floor and was pumping the clutch while trying to get through a v-notch with boulders. I think I deserved it.

Dana 44 would be a step backwards in stoutness.

Dangerously underpowered? How so?

What motor would you have had Toyota install in '87?

How about the International 345 V-8, with fuel injection?:D

Regarding the inner axle seals, Marlin Crawler has (apparently) a new and improved seal for this job.

Love my 2nd 60, as leaky as it is,yes its slow but I never have speeding tickets.
Big Question:Did any other automotive manufacturer make an all metal dash as late as 1987 (maybe later don't own a 62) in the US?
Thats one trademark about my 60 that I love.....strickly rugged.
This thread seems to complain about the same attributes the 60 series diehard guys/gals love!
Try to match the 60 series style, reliability, and unwillingness to die in a true 4wd from the 1980's....yeah its not happenin.;)
just my 02:beer:

try finding parts for an international v-8. that was hard 10 years ago.

not that they didn't make amazing engines, their parts distributiom was always bad.

I merge onto I-5, 280, 101, 80 etc.. all the time in my 60, in all kinds of conditions. It's no speed demon, but I'm not holding my breath as I do it either. If your having that much trouble than I think you really should take D'animals advice and start tuning your rig.

BTW, I hate green tea and never voted for Kerry... I drive an old fj60, shoot bird, drink beer and talk sh!t with the best of 'em, and while I consider my self a liberal I'm sure as hell no pussy so watcher g'damn mouth! :flipoff2:

Best. Reply. Ever

I've never tried green tea but if there's any left pass it on over to me.

I'm not sure I can relate. I've had my '84 FJ60 for about a dozen years now and the only time it seemed really gutless was pulling a trailer over Raton Pass, New Mexico. Sure it's not a speed demon but it moves along pretty well. Even better when it's tuned well.
The other issues haven't been a problem...except maybe the rust.

I love my LandCruiser!

how is that gear ratio on the highway? are you running stock 2f with 4 speed?

Well you certainly ain't in any hurry, that's for sure! I don't like to run it that hard so I limit my speed to about 60-65 max. That puts me in the 2800rpm ballpark. I'd prefer it around 2500 but that's something like 55MPH. It'll go faster but the fuel mileage suffers and I'm sure the engine does too. I just finished a couple thousand miles pulling a trailer across the country and for the most part I was getting a little over 16MPG. When I hit the mountains it would drop to around 14.5MPG but it never felt weak. The slow trip over Raton Pass, I did a while back when my cat was clogging up (I don't have that problem anymore ;) ).
So yes, the engine is stock 2F (except for the K&N filter). I keep it in pretty good tune and run decent gas and frequent oil changes. I used to run Syntec but recently switched back to regular dino oil (because I was changing it a lot after letting the truck sit for a while). I'm thinking about running Mobil 1 Synthetic in it (I run it in all my other cars).
I currently have the stock 4 speed but I am going to order a new 5 speed in the next week or so and rebuild my T-case myself. I'm also thinking of getting a valve job and maybe going ahead an re-ringing it while I'm in there.
I've put over 100K miles on my Cruiser since I bought it and it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned (currently about 168K miles on it). Sure I've cussed it (even tonight as I changed my u-joints). Sure parts can be difficult to get and expensive when you find them. It's not the fastest, prettiest or most fuel efficient thing around but let me tell you something...

I left my FJ60 alone in the desert for 4 years and other than repairing 2 wires and a 6 inch section of fuel line the mice ate. I changed the oil and drove it across the country pulling a trailer (2,870 miles). You tell me another vehicle you would trust to have that kind of reliability!

i can't read all these post.

these 60s are junk! (insert sarcasam)
and i drive mine every day!!!!!

not a thing wrong with them ;)

seems to me that chuck bought it cuz he thought it was pretty
then found out he didn't buy a car

that's not to say chuck's a bad guy (though he sure did piss in the well here) but it seems like he might enjoy his 60 more with a V8. Hey, some people like V8s a lot. They are different than a 2F. If you want to go fast on the highway, a V8 is better.

I miss my 2fj60. A little. I sure like the 2H more, despite the fact it is even slower/more anemic... it gets over 20mpg.

...Yeah, and with the 1HD-T I doubt anyone would find it 'anemic' anymore!!!

I gotta agree on the oil galley plug thing... but hey, all in all, its built pretty well. Once you get your Jim C carb it'll have an extra 100hp! Luckily there are lots of things you can do it you WANT to. I put in longs, lockers, H55F, OME ultimate, and have a 383 sittin in the garage waiting to be finished. Its never gonna be an 80 (or a 100 for that matter) but I still think its the best of the lot! I'm tearing up now so I'm just going to go out and give my 60 a big hug.
